Back from a nice vacation and in the process of trying to get back into my daily routine- which will start tomorrow with a prompt visit to the grocery store...

So, as I resettle we're going to do another challenge with a twist. Pick a series from the list:

Transformers
MLP: Friendship is Magic
Mass Effect
JLI
Bat-family
Birds of Prey
Young Justice (comics)
General DCU
Ultimate Spider-Man
Slam Dunk
One Piece
Invader Zim
Fullmetal Alchemist
Red vs Blue
Discworld
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Skip Tracers
human!Wreckers

Series only, please NO CHARACTERS. This is will probably be challenging enough as it.

Pick up a book- preferably the closest one on hand. Go to page 42 and type the 6th sentence. I'll have to make a drabble in your chosen series that uses that sentence.

Let's see how long it takes me to rue this challenge.

Beyond the slamming of the door he could hear the easy dismissals of 'He just needs a moment' and 'It'll pass, don't worry'. And no matter how he tromped and how far he went and how much he strained his ears, Damian couldn't hear anyone following after him. He kept telling himself that was fine- he had never needed anyone growing up, he certainly didn't need anyone checking up on him now. But in the end he could not contain the secret any longer, and whispered into a bed of reeds, "I want to belong with them."

"She spoils you and I don't know what for," he said to the back of the horse's head one early morning after the first frost.

It always took a lot of patient urging and coaxing but Fluttershy would eventually get the tiny mittens, scarf and ear covers onto Angel before allowing him outside and Spike would follow for no other reason than because Fluttershy had asked him to.

"She spoils you and I don't know what for," he said to the back of the rabbit's head one early morning after the first frost.

Angel stopped and looked at the baby dragon for a long, hard moment before turning and hopping along again. Spike shook his head- even if Angel understood what he said, he certain couldn't understand the rabbit anyway.

It was a symbiotic relationship- the Casseticons lacked certain detectable components which allowed them to infiltrate with ease but it also meant they only had a limited time before their internal systems shut down. In order to survive, they fed off of Soundwave's systems like parasites and, in return, he had access to all their thoughts and knowledge. It was because of their lack of independent survival the Casseticons were how they were- why Buzzsaw was ruthless when he fought, why Laserbeak and Ratbat were so crafty, why Rumble and Frenzy were belligerent. They had to learn fast, take chances, and live in the metabolic fast lane. If they were too slow or careless, they were dead. If they never left Soundwave, it was practically the same thing.

Shepard studied him a moment longer, wondering if there was an attempt at alien humor here. Wrex just grinned toothely back- at least Shepard assumed it was a grin, it was difficult to tell with krogans.

"It's because your heads are so soft," Wrex said as if that explained the presumed joke, "they can cave in with a little squeeze."

"That's... great, Wrex." Shepard said, deciding krogan humor just wasn't for her.

Skywarp liked to think he was an easy-going kind of mech. Some jets tended to be high strung or got neurotic about little details. That wasn't Skywarp's thing. Which is why, if asked, he would say he absolutely was not sitting in the shady corner of a bar watching Thundercracker talking with some little red jet like it was no big deal- as if Thundercracker regularly talked to strangers with great wingspans. And Skywarp was not seething about it, either.

They were too far away for Skywarp to hear what they were saying, but when the red jet leaned in too close, that was enough for him to stomp up, brushed the back of his knuckles against a blue wingtip and said, "Hey, TC! Not introducing your wingmate?"

With his trademark exasperation, Thundercracker said, "Starscream, my business partner Skywarp. Skywarp, potential wingmate Starscream."

Skywarp's optics narrowed at that and his smile froze on his faceplate. "Nice to meet you," said Skywarp at last. "Any potential wingmate of TC's is okay by me." By which he meant, obviously, there were going to be many and likely unpleasant words had beyond Starscream's hearing.

Aaaaand another novel lengths...

She worried. She was their friend and she couldn't be there, actively helping them so of course she worried and between Al getting himself torn up by a homunculus and Ed being gone doing something, Winry couldn't help but worry more.

Which was why, when she realized Al was missing, Winry was kind of freaking out. She searched all over the hotel, went through every open door (and a couple locked ones), searched every alley in an eight block radius and even asked if a one-armed suit of armor had been seen around (which got her a lot of funny looks she just ignored).

And when he returned... when he finally returned... Winry just wanted to beat on his chest and yell at him for making her feel so scared and helpless- just like he did when he came back the other night, claws gouging into his body.

"Where were you," she demanded, trying to keep her voice from quavering.

Al looked down and away. "...out."

"Where?"

"Just taking care of some things."

"Idiot!" She snapped. "You couldn't tell me about it? You couldn't ask me to take care of it? I'm your friend, aren't I? But you never let me help!"

Al shrunk back more, "It wasn't important-"

"Then why couldn't you say anything?"

"It's... a little embarrassing."

Winry lifted her head up, arms crossed over her chest and said, "Tell me. Tell me or I'll get mad."

And Al could tell when she was being serious. "I... I have to regularly clean my armor. Sometimes dirt gets in the joints and make it hard to move or I have to make sure there's no water, rusting parts up..."

Winry stared at him. "Is that all?"

"Um... yeah?"

"You couldn't ask me to help clean you?"

"I didn't want to impose-"

"Idiot!" She cried again, this time with relief that it was something so simple. She went to her bag to grab her polishing kit. "That's part of my job as an automail mechanic and a friend, you know! Sit!"

Al- easily cowed by her presence -did as he was told and Winry took him apart, piece by piece, and meticulously cleaned and checked every inch of metal.

Eventually Al asked, "Would you really have been mad at me if I hadn't told you?"

"Maybe," she said quietly, running a swab through the little interlocking bits of the ankle. "Sometimes I'm afraid that you and Ed worry so much about protecting me, you'll forget t o tell me the simple things I can do to help. Like this."

A heavy finger touched Winry's hair where it rested against her back. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again."

Ed and Lin looked up at their guide, then each other, then at their guide again.

"Mrah?" Lin asked around a mouthful of something that looked like it had once been corn and bread and possibly cheese.

"I said," the guide said slowly, "you've et a village and a half between yer, since we came down from the mountains."

Swallowing their food, the two conferred briefly until Ed pulled back to say, "And?"

The guide starred at them blankly. "Ne'ermind."

The report came to Optimus Prime's desk with the warning of, "There is unfortunate news."

He studied it himself, but saw nothing but shapes and colors. "What is it?"

"A spectrometer reading," Perceptor told him, "from our teams taking core samples of Cybertron from various locations."

"And what does it mean?"

"Just what we have feared. The planet has become unstable and is in a state of decay."

Prime put a hand to his helmet, cycling air harshly. "Is there any way to stop it?"

"Nothing short of a mass exodus. Even if we were to end our war this very moment, our continued existence is too much of a strain on Cybertron's resources."

Prime's blue optics burned dim. "So we have to abandon our home?"

"There is little other recourse, sir."

There was a long silence. Then Optimus Prime opened a line, "Prowl- get everyone together. We're in our worst case scenario."

Some times it was so difficult to know what Luffy was thinking or what his opinion was or if he had any at all. Whenever he thought anything beyond 'meat' and 'full speed ahead' was a mystery to his crew and Nami, with that moment being what it was, did not appreciate it.

She stood, just outside of arms reach of him and said, "I want to hear your thoughts now, before we set a course that can't be reversed. If we do this, there's no stopping. No changing. It's all or nothing and I need to know that you understand it and you want it, too."

Nami should've known better- what was outside of her reach did not make it outside of Luffy's which she was suddenly reminded of as an arm wrapped warmly around her waist and pulling her against his chest.

"All the time you've known me," he said into the orange waves of Nami's hair, "when have I ever stopped or changed my mind? I'll see this through to the end, just like every important thing I've done. No matter what it takes, making you happy and keeping you happy is my greatest goal."

She pulled back, just enough to put her hand to his cheek, "Just so long as you're happy with me."

Luffy's lips spread into that infectious, boyish, too-wide grin he'd never grown out of. "Absolutely!"

"We went through the orchards (which incidentally were glorious with apple blossom) and Joker kept bucking."

Gabby's hands froze on the controls and she turned a blank stare toward Ken and Tali. "I'm sorry- what was that?"

Tali's head tilted to one side. "Commander Shepard took us to an apple orchard for a break after the mission. There weren't any actual fruit, but the blossoms were very pretty."

"No, I mean- what about Joker bucking?"

"I've never even seen him leave his chair!" Ken exclaimed.

"Oh," the quarian's shoulders shook with a quiet laugh, "Joker the dog that belongs to the orchard owner. He liked following us around and kept bucking things."

The humans shared another look before Gabby asked, "What do you mean 'bucking things'?"

"Jumping up and wrapping his legs around something and, you know- bucking. Especially Garrus's leg for some reason."

Ken burst into laughter while Gabby had to bite her lip for a moment. "I think I know what you're talking about," she said with a restrained tone, "and he wasn't bucking."

"But he sounds a lot like our own Joker," snickered Ken.

The Wreckers were some cool customers. In fact, it seemed to be the more chaotic and desperate things got, the more stable and controlled the Wreckers were. And someone always had some dry quip. That wasn't so terribly unusual. Some had even noticed that Scoop would sing under his breath as he picked off the enemy one by one- which was unnerving to some, especially since he never realized he did so until it was pointed out.

But the fact was, the nine of them were inhumanely unrufflable. When other, non-Wreckers thought back on it they would always admit it was actually kind of frightening- what kind of mindset would someone have to be ambushed and under heavy fire and not go mad from fear of death? But, they'd also have to admit, when they were in an ambush under heavy fire, it certainly helped calm them down to have someone next to them that wasn't freaked the fuck out.

"You're going out with him again? After what an utter disaster the first date was?" Beatriz flopped on Tora's bed with a disgusted 'ugh!' "Why are you torturing yourself?"

"Because I'm sure Guy really is a sweetie underneath all the..."

"Guy-ness?"

"Gruff-ness," Tora said smartly, checking to see that her hair clip was secure. "I don't believe that the sweet Guy we first met was just because of some silly knock on the head."

Rolling over on to her belly, Beatriz continued making faces at Tora in the mirror while Tora pretended not to be laughing at her. "I don't see why we can't knock him on the head again. Maybe he'll regain some decency..."

"Bea- that's a terrible thing to say!"

"It would be if it weren't true. Face it- the man is a neanderthal."

"Well, I don't believe it." Tora stood, grabbing her purse and coat. These arguments with Beatriz actually did her some good, reinforcing her belief that Guy wasn't nearly as terrible as he tried to be. Belief was everything. If she didn't believe so strongly, she would've cast him aside- ignored him and scoffed at him just like everyone else did. But he needed the attention and affection, just as anyone else did and Tora knew, once he understood that her affection was honest, he'd stop trying to drive her away.
