Well, I suppose for the surprisingly amount of time it took to hash this thing out (i was distracted by porn D:) I made up for it by how surprisingly LONG it got. If I follow my outline right (which is not at all a sure thing) some more light-hearted fun stuff should be coming up in the next chapter. Allegedly.

Prologue
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
The cage, as the Wreckers called it, was really just their version of a sparkling’s playpen. There were several of them set up around Xantium, all just quick, hashed out things Twin Twist created from some unused supplies laying around. They weren’t pretty, but they were sturdy and guaranteed to keep the errant sparkling in one place.
So they thought. They had no clue how he kept managing to get out because both Twin Twist and Scoop had gone over each one several times. There was no logical way a sparkling could get out on their own.
Of course, most errant sparkling didn’t have large sentient ships willing to play with them. Unlike the other Wreckers, Xantium took to the situation with more curiosity than frustration. She’d never dealt with a sparkling before and to her he was still Springer. Just a much smaller version. Xantium didn’t understand why the others were so upset with what had happened. Sure, Springer wasn’t capable of doing the things he used to, but he was probably even more amusing in this new form.
So, whenever the Wreckers put the little ‘bot in the cage and ignored him, and when Springer got bored toddling around the small area, Xantium let him out. It was a simple thing for her. The cage itself wasn’t actually locked, just welded scrap too tall for the sparkling to climb out of (thank Primus he didn’t have those leg boosters that gave him his name, either). Xantium was, however, originally a cargo ship. That meant she had restraints and automated armatures to help deal with large, heavy boxes of supplies. It was laughably easy for her to pluck little Springer from the cage, set him down on the deck and chuckle to herself as her mechs went crazy looking for him.
Besides, they needed to learn they couldn’t just ignore the poor thing. He was one of them, after all! He was their leader no matter how small he got! Though Xantium did agree it was difficult to think of him as a leader when he couldn’t even talk properly.
But they learned and Xantium continued to watch over them all as she always did. As the Wreckers learned to care for the sparkling, they slowly came to accept his existence. Twin Twist, surprisingly enough, was one of the first to come around. They were attempting to find something to occupy the sparkling and Twin Twist and Scoop figured some puzzles would probably entertain him. The shovel, of course, took to the task with all the gusto he had come to be associated with. It wasn’t until about three toys into it that Twin Twist started getting mesmerized by how quick the little sparkling learned.
“Hey, Spin!” He called out, watching the happily clicking sparkling disassembling and reassembling the cube with pudgy little hands. “Check this out! The little guy catches on quick!”
“That’s great, Twist.” Came the barely growled reply. It had gotten to the point that the driller was so enthralled with analyzing the sparkling’s clearly-developed-far-beyond-his-age intelligence that Topspin was left to do all the science-work on his own. And Topspin was damned close to giving it up. He was programmed to be a medic, not a scientist. They were two different fields and Twin Twist- who was the better chemist of the two –had given up on finding a solution without help from an actual scientist.
“C’mon! You’re not even looking.”
Thoroughly annoyed, Topspin slammed his hands against the table, rattling the equipment settled there. “No, Twist, I’m not! You know why? Because I’m trying to solve this Primus-damned situation we’re in!”
The sparkling had stopped his playing and stared at the hover vehicle with wide, frightened optics while Twin Twist frowned. “I know you’re stressed, Spin, but chill.”
“I’m fine! I’m more worried about everyone else’s mental state because- in case you haven’t noticed –our leader has been turned into a sparkling and is currently chewing on a teflon resin puzzle piece!”
“What? Oh- hey! Don’t chew on that- that’s not in your dietary requirements!”
Something inside Topspin snapped. He was suddenly at the side of the cage and wrenched the piece from the sparkling with a sharp ‘stop that’ cracking the air. The sparkling looked up at him in frightened shock. There was a soft hitch in his systems and a fine tremble started through him-
Twin Twist snatched the little guy to his chest. “What the hell is wrong with you? He’s just a sparkling!”
“No, he’s not! He’s not a sparkling, he doesn’t act like that and don’t you dare encourage it!”
The sparkling wailed in a high, staticy discharge of whirls and clicks, hiding in the corners of Twin Twist’s armor. “He’s a sparkling, Spin! No, he’s not supposed to be but he is now and we have no choice but to deal with it!”
“I’m not accepting that!”
“Then don’t, but don’t take it out on him!” The driller snapped back, one hand rubbing soothing circles on the little green back. “He may be mentally more developed than his projected age group, but he’s still a sparkling and you can’t ignore that!”
“Springer. Is not. A sparkling.”
Frosty blue optics narrowed dangerously. “You might wanna straighten that out with Roadbuster. You say he’s Springer, he says he’s not. Until you get your head out of your exhaust port, I’m out.” Before Topspin could open his mouth, driller and sparkling swept out in a furious storm.
When the door snapped shut, the lab was filled with a low growl.
“Oh- don’t even start, Ti!” He bit out at the nearest wall. “Do you know how slagging frustrating this whole thing is? Every damn time I turn around it’s another check-up or someone’s lost him or I need to reformulate his energon because his development is skewed! On top of that I’ve got my regular duties and a Primus damned war to worry about, how the hell am I supposed to figure out how to turn him back?”
The various beakers and petri dishes and data pads scattered on the table was suddenly so… enraging to Topspin he nearly swept a hand out to smash them into the floor. “I can’t deal with all of this! I can’t look at him day after day, stuck like that because I can’t figure out what to do! He’s depending on us to turn him back to normal and Twist is over there playing with him and I’m…” he trembled, hands clenched tight at his sides. “I’m helpless, Ti. I can’t be helpless- I’m the fragging medic! I have to know how to fix everything- if I don’t, someone dies!”
He slumped against a wall, scrubbing hands over helmet. “Every time I see him, every time someone’s playing with him like… like they’ve come to accept him as a sparkling is just a reminder that I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s as good as saying I’ve failed.” Xantium hummed gently at him, letting the jumpstarter vent. “I know it’s not his fault, but whenever I see him like that… it’s like I’ve let him down. I can’t, not to Springer. I can’t ever let him down…”
She wrapped Topspin up in warmth and vibrations and if he never forgave himself for this, she did.

Whirl carried the sparkling like he would a squirming barrel of some sort of dangerous, possibly radioactive nuisance (if he ever brought himself to carrying something like that). Twin Twist had passed the thing of to him when the driller went on shift and Whirl immediately went to find someone else to pass the responsibility off to.
Oh, he understood Roadbuster’s dressing down- no mistake. It wasn’t so much Whirl going against a perfectly legitimate aft-chewing as it was he made sure he had things to do that would keep him from being able to watch the wiggly thing. And the helo knew exactly who to dump him off to.
Sandstorm couldn’t do anything but wrap his arms around the sparkling suddenly shoved into his chest. “Enjoy!” Whirl waved, walking off without missing a step.
“Hey- wait a klik! I’m off shift! I’m not scheduled to deal with the thing!”
“Sorry, but everyone else is on duty or recharging. You’re the only one that can look after him.”
The triplechanger growled loudly. “You’re the one that’s supposed to be looking after him! I can’t watch him- this is the first chance I’ve had to go for a flight in half a deca-cycle!”
“Roadbuster wants me to do maintenance check on our crafts. Can’t do that when I’m on shift at the bridge, can’t do that when I’ve got the bratling, so we’ve gotta make due. I owe ya!”
“You’ve been putting that off to deal with when we do the rest of the maintenance checks!” But Whirl paid him no heed, disappearing around a corner. “……frag this, I’m flying. End of story.” Sandstorm stalked off towards the nearest cage, set on plopping the sparkling there and heading into space for a much needed stress burn-off.
Except that the doors wouldn’t open. “Xantium… don’t do this to me. You don’t know how close I am to snapping- don’t try to deny me this.” She kept the doors resolutely closed and flashed her lights stubbornly. “Ti, I’m not kidding around here. If I can’t fly, someone is going to be seriously hurting and I guarantee it’ll be whoever is closest on hand.” The sparkling wriggled in delight at the vibrations of Sandstorm’s engine, doing his little be-beep giggle and smacking his hands repeatedly on the orange chestplate. The triplechanger shifted the bundle so he couldn’t keep doing that. “Oh, stop.”
Xantium, as always, was immovable. “Look- it’s just like Whirl said. Everyone else can’t watch him and unless you want me to take him flying with me…” he trailed at the ship’s thoughtful hum. “…are you kidding? I can’t take him flying!” …or could he? Sandstorm tilted his head to regard the sparkling who looked right back up in blank curiosity.
Hmm… He was small enough to fit inside Sandstorm’s cockpit and they were deep enough in Autobot territory a threat of a Decepticon attack was highly improbable. “Well, little guy? Do you want to give this flying thing a go?”
The sparkling stared up at him. Then gave another happy giggle, patting Sandstorm’s battlemask. An unintentional smile curved at his optic band. “Alright, then. I’ll take it easy on you, but if you purge inside of me, I’m expelling you into deep space, got it?”
He took the series of gleeful chirrups and beeps as an affirmative.

Topspin was still deep in his failed attempt at science when Scoop came in with a couple containers of energon. The shovel sat up on a nearby table, idling swinging his legs as he talked to the other mech about the events of the day he missed out on being holed up in the lab. Topspin- usually on top of all the gossip and news –had fallen behind in his research due to his mini-breakdown earlier and only gave Scoop partial attention.
“-when he got back, RB and Side were torqued, but the kid seemed like he had a lot of fun. RB let him off with a warning, said next time he was going to take the kid out for a joyride, he should tell someone first. ‘Course he’s mainly frustrated with Whirl, but there’s not a lot he can really do about that right now. Not when Whirl keeps finding legitimate ways to get around dealing with the little guy.”
“Hm.”
Scoop watched the jumpstarter carefully. “You do realize you’ve been working double-shifts, right?”
“Meh.”
“You were supposed to be watching him now.”
That got a pause as Topspin looked up- a genuinely confused look on his face. “I was?”
Scoop just waved it off. “Forget it. Twist has him, said you’ve been too busy.”
“Yeah, well…”
“You know, he’s been in a pretty bad mood since that last shift he had with you.” The payloader said knowingly. Topspin pushed away from the table with a defeated sight.
“We… kinda got into a fight earlier. Well, more like I was being a slag-headed jerk.” He rubbed at his helmet self-consciously. “I was kinda hoping he’d… not exactly get over it but…”
“Pfft. Twist can’t hold a grudge, you know that. ‘Specially against you.” Scoop leaned over to give Topspin’s shoulder a little shove. “Go on. You obviously want to apologize, so go for it.”
“Yeah, but- I have all this stuff-“
“You touch any of that without the express purpose of putting them away so you can talk to Twist, you’re on my list. And you know I hold a grudge.”
That was certainly threat enough. “Okay, okay- I’m going!” He flashed Scoop a grateful grin which the other just shook his head at.
“Kids.” He muttered ironically to himself.
When Topspin entered his quarters he was actually surprised to find Twin Twist wasn’t there. Querying the others they said he hadn’t asked to stay with any of them. That made Topspin frown deeply. It was rare for Twin Twist to recharge in his own quarters- he was extremely tactile. He almost always had to be around someone in order to be comfortable and Topspin was worried that their argument earlier caused the driller to retreat in on himself.
Xantium confirmed that Twin Twist was in his quarters and the door was unlocked which was a clear sign to Topspin to go in and apologize for being so short with him earlier. “Hey, Twist? Look, I’m sorry- oh.” Topspin froze, the other jumpstarter was sprawled out on his little-used berth, both arms cradling the sparkling to his chest.
In the dimmed light of the room, a little green-helmed head lifted and looked blearily at Topspin, giving a confused chirrup. Topspin couldn’t help but grin back, bringing a finger to his lips to shush the kid. He approached the berth on quiet peds, almost as surprised at the fact Twin Twist didn’t online at his presence as he was the fact Twin Twist was in his quarters at all.
Very carefully he extracted the sparkling from Twin Twist’s grip and the little thing beeped tiredly at the medic. “Hey, it’s alright.” He said. “I ain’t gonna hurt you.” He ran a finger over the soft curve of the little one’s face, grinning when the finger was caught in a tired and intent grip. “You’re not so bad for a sparkling, really. You really do catch on quicker that you should. Guess there’s some part of Springer inside there after all.” Topspin sat on the edge of Twin Twist’s berth, voice pitched low as he spoke. The rumble of his words and systems was lulling the sparkling back into recharge. “I shouldn’t be taking this out on you, it’s not like you asked for this to happen. It’s just been hard for us to adjust to and if you’re as smart as Twist says you are, I hope you understand that.”
Something mumbled incoherently around Topspin’s waist and arms were suddenly wrapped tight around him. Twin Twist’s head against his side forced the medic to lay down and as the other mech pretty much attempted to drape himself all over Topspin, he muttered out, “Alright, alright there, Clingy. I get it. I’m going nowhere.” It took some creative maneuvering, but Topspin managed to get the two of them situated. The sparkling, somehow, burrowed between the two bodies until he was sandwiched neatly- could feel their press but wouldn’t be squashed by their weight.
As the kid drifted off again, Topspin couldn’t help smiling and stroking at the little helmet. He wasn’t a bad little guy at all.
