Word Count: 999, right on the cusp
Characters: Haruhi, Mori
Summary: In which Haruhi finally gets to try oh-toro.
The best time to expect uninvited visitors, Haruhi figured, was when you were out or dirty. In this case, she was doing the laundry, her and her father’s clothes folded in neat piles, waiting to be put away. At the sound of knuckles on the door, she gave a soft sigh. It’s been an uneventful Sunday and she had enough eventfulness the rest of the week to want to keep it that way. Hoping it was just the landlady dropping off some snacks like she had the occasion to do and expecting another bum rush from those rich bastards, she opened to the door to… “Mori-senpai?”
He held out a box quietly. For a moment Haruhi just looked at it.
“Oh,” she flushed a little, remembering her manners. “Thank you.”
“Oh-Toro.”
“Oh…?” Hastily, Haruhi stuck her head out the door, looking around for any sign of someone rampaging to take the box from the protective circle of her arms. Deeming it safe, she beamed up at the senior. “Would you like to come in, Mori-senpai?”
“Ah.”
Haruhi put the box of oh-toro on the table and went into the kitchen as Mori sat to undo the laces of his boots. “Would you like some tea?” A soft grunt was her answer and, though she didn’t know if it was a yes or just him tugging at his boots, Haruhi took it for a yes.
She brought the two cups on a tray with a small bottle of soy sauce and a small dish. Mori had already opened the box and waited patiently for Haruhi to sit before pouring out the soy sauce and sipping at his tea- barley from the color and taste of it. He nodded at the sushi, indicating for Haruhi to eat.
Licking her lips, Haruhi picked one piece up, letting the fatty tuna soak in the soy sauce. She let it drip in the dish twice before popping the sushi in her mouth. Her eyes slid closed and she let out a soft moan as she practically melted with the taste. Slowly she bit into it, rolling the fish about her tongue, savoring every moment of it as if she didn’t have an entire box to go through.
Ah- she had a guest! Haruhi’s eyes snapped open and she swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, Mori-senpai! I completely forgot you were si-“
But he was smiling at her- the same, soft smile he’d give Honey whenever the small blonde fell asleep on his back. The same soft smile so many of his customers confided in Haruhi they came day after day to try to see. “They’re for you to enjoy.” He told her.
Haruhi brought her tea to her lips, hiding the shy smile she felt growing there. “You’re very kind.” She told the cup. Having taken a sip and setting the cup back down, she smiled brightly up at Mori. “Mori-senpai, you should have some too. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it all by myself and my father won’t be home until late tonight.”
The look he gave was- for him –surprisingly open, as if sharing the sushi was something he hadn’t even thought about. She made a little face at him. “Did you expect me to eat this all by myself? Mori-senpai, if you think I’m too skinny, you could just say it. It won’t hurt my feelings.”
He turned his face away and when he brought a hand up to his face, Haruhi realized he was chuckling. It was deep, pleasant sound and Haruhi closed her eyes happily to it. As she opened them again, Mori reached out for the oh-toro. “I’ll help you.” He said, the tail end of laughter still in his voice.
They ate in a comfortable silence, Haruhi occasionally saying something, Mori responding with his usual short answers. After they had eaten the sushi, Haruhi refilled their cups and they drank tea in the same comforting silence.
“Thank you, Mori-senpai. It was even better than I imagined.” Haruhi fingered the rim of her cup idly. “I should make my dad save some money so he and I can have some later.”
“Takashi.”
“Eh?” She blinked, surprised to find Mori’s gaze intent upon her. Ah, no. He wanted her to call him by his given name, something only Honey was allowed to call him. Haruhi couldn’t help the little thrill of happiness that fluttered around in her. It felt like she was being given a privilege no one else was. “Alright, Takashi-senpai.”
He smiled at her again and Haruhi liked the way it softened his eyes and brought a warmth to him that was almost surprising. No wonder he was popular despite his quiet disposition. Suddenly he stood saying, “Thank you for your hospitality.”
On reflex, Haruhi looked out the window and saw that the sun was already low in the west. “Ah, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to keep you so late.”
“It’s fine.”
As he went about, lacing up his boots, Haruhi carried to dishes into the kitchen, filling the sink with water. She put the dishes in the steaming water, letting them soak as she went to stand behind Takashi.
“It was nice having you over.” She told him, watching his deft hands knotting the laces. “You’re welcome back any time.”
Unfolding himself, the top of Takashi’s head nearly reached the ceiling. “Goodnight, Haruhi.” The edges of his lips twitched softly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Goodnight, Takashi-senpai.” She waved him down the stairs, then went to the railing and watched a chauffeur open the back door of the car. Takashi’s eyes flickered up at her and this time he didn’t bother to hide his smile he waved back.
Haruhi stood at the railing, waving at the car until it disappeared around the corner. After a few moments in the fading sun, she sighed happily and stretched. She washed the dishes and put away the laundry and the entire time she couldn’t help but to smile.

Date: 2008-02-09 11:30 pm (UTC)Oooooh fangirl squee. They're definitely my favourite pairing but there's never any real good doses of these two without them becoming horribly OOC. This is definitely a new favourite piece of mine. ♥
I definitely got a good chuckle from, "A soft grunt was her answer and, though she didn’t know if it was a yes or just him tugging at his boots, Haruhi took it for a yes."
