Title: Boys and the Beanstalk
Fandom: One Piece
Rating: G
Word Count: 415
Characters: Wiper, Braham, Kamakiri, Genbou, Shandian Chief
Summary: A question that suddenly struck me as I washed dishes. And one the boys certainly didn’t answer.
They were just boys, after all. If they weren’t wrestling each other or causing trouble somewhere, they were arguing.
“I bet you it’s not even real.”
“Not real? What- are you blind under that basket of yours?”
“If it’s real then how does it grow?”
The other three fell silent under Braham’s question.
The chief- they didn’t know what else to call him, even Wiper’s Nan who was so old she was losing her sight only knew him as chief –watched the four boys with amusement.
“Well, what about the trees?”
“What about them?”
“They grow. And they’re huge!” Genbou said, throwing his meaty arms out wide. “Not as big as Giant Jack, but still huge.”
“The trees grow out of the Vearth.” Wiper said slowly. A blade of grass danced between his teeth, freshly plucked from when they were racing on Milky Dials earlier. “Giant Jack isn’t on Vearth and clouds can’t grow plants.”
Genbou shot back, “How do you know? There could be Vearth on the White Sea.”
“If there was Vearth on the White Sea,” Kamakiri waved a hand, “don’t you think someone would’ve noticed it after 400 years?”
“Maybe it’s not from the White Sea. Maybe it’s growing from the Blue Sea.” Braham said thoughtfully.
The four of them dwelled on it.
“But if it’s from the Blue Sea,” Wiper asked, “wouldn’t there be Blue Sea dwellers around?”
They dwelled on this some more. The chief smiled at the conversation, curious to see how all this would conclude.
“It might’ve grown from Shandia.” Braham finally conceded. “We don’t know how big a beanstalk can get in 400 years.” Genbou beamed, vindicated.
Kamakiri snorted. “If Giant Jack grew AFTER the Vearth came to the sky, why does it come up through Shandia?”
A hand clamped tightly over his mouth. “Idiot!” Wiper hissed, blade slipping from his lips. A shadow fell over the group and they looked up to see the chief standing over them. Kamakiri and Wiper could feel the wolf’s head glowering at them.
“Boys,” his old voice rumbled, “how would you know that?”
With Wiper’s hand still tight over his mouth Kamakiri could only look up, eyes wide behind his shades. “Uh,” Wiper stuttered, “one of the older warriors told us?” Kamakiri’s head bobbed wildly.
“Braham. Genbou. I believe you have some training to attend to.”
With barely a mumbled, ‘yessir’ the other two boys bolted. Kamakiri and Wiper gulped.
“Nice, big mouth.”
“It was Wiper’s idea!”
“You little bastard!”
