“Well, well. How the mighty have fallen.”
“Stuff it, Renji.”
The redhead tsked. “That’s captain to you, brat.”
“Like I’d ever call you ‘captain’. And in case you failed to notice, I’m not exactly a brat anymore.”
Renji grinned, perched on a lamppost in the park. “Yeah, I noticed. But technically yer still a diaper-ridden babe compared to me.”
Ichigo finally looked up and scowled. “And you still look like a retarded monkey. Especially with the rat ass on your chin.”
Hand automatically raising to the facial hair in question, Renji sneered, then gave a vindictive grin. “You know I wouldn’t have believed it if Rukia hadn’t told me.”
“What, the first time? Even if she’s telling the truth you’ve gotten too trusting.”
“It took ‘er five times.” There was a Hollow three blocks away but neither paid it attention. The assigned shinigami would take care of it. “Time sure passes.”
Ichigo smirked softly at the change in tone. “Guess so. Your division’s been runnin’ you into the ground, then?”
“Feh! Between me and Yumi the only ones stronger than us are the 11th!”
There was a short pause. “Yumichika is your vice-captain?”
“He’s more on-the-ball than you’d think. Beyond all that ‘beauty’ shit, anyway.”
“Never pegged you the type to pick up the flamer.”
“Fuck you.” Renji waved absently at a confused pigeon hovering at the post. “All the people I could work with, all of ‘em are either captains or happy in their current divisions.”
Ichigo stretched his leg out, knee popping. “So what’s going on with everyone else?”
“Hitsugaya’s still captain of the 10th.”
“Still short?”
“Hit puberty a while back. Probably as tall as you were when we first met.”
He smiled crookedly at the ground. “That’s gotta be a sight.”
“Ikkaku’s still 3rd seat. Still tryin’ to measure up to Zaraki.”
“Che. The most single-minded insane guy I ever knew.” Ichigo paused. “Both of ‘em.”
“Rangiku’s captain of the 3rd, you know. Probably the strongest they’ve ever been. Rukia finally got Kuchiki to let her go for a seat.”
“Yeah.” Ichigo smirked again, a little more fondly. “She came by to tell me that. Vice-captain of the 13th, right? Don’t think I’ve seen her so proud in my life.” He shook his head heavily. “Be nice to see everyone again.”
“Yeah.” Renji switched position, legs dangling in the air. “Sorry ‘bout Orihime.”
“Death isn’t something you can escape. We especially know that.” Ichigo tapped a finger against his knee in a timeless tune. “But she was a good woman. How is she now?”
“Doin’ well for herself. Don’t know what happened to her fairies, but she’ll probably be eligible to enter the academy in a few years.”
“Good. Just keep an eye on her for me, will you? You remember how clumsy she tends to be.”
“She was bunkin’ with the Shibas last I heard. She’ll be taken care of.”
Ichigo’s brow furrowed. “That’s… good. I guess.”
“Mama, Grandpa’s talkin’ to himself again.”
“And Grandpa’s not old enough that he can’t hear you.” Ichigo said loudly.
“Oh. Sorry, Grandpa.”
“Come on, Dad. Dinner should be waiting for us.”
“Right, right.” With several creaks and a groan, Ichigo leaned against his cane. He paused, noticing the little girl squinting at the lamppost. “What’re you starin’ at this time?”
She blushed and hid behind her mother’s hand. “Nothin’, Grandpa.”
But Ichigo looked up and Renji smirked right back down. “Keep an eye on that one. She’s got good sense. I’ll see you around, Ichigo.”
In return he smiled that same smile that was invincible and familiar despite the years and wear. “Ah.”
