Summary: It’s not the symbol that’s important but the meaning behind it.
Being a thief Nami knew that some things were of more value than others. Being who she was she also knew that sometimes that value was more personal, more intangible and more important than monetary.
So whenever Luffy’s hat got torn or started to fray she was always the first person to offer to mend it.
Not just because it was important to Luffy but because there was a legacy with it. It belonged to a strong and great pirate, given to him by a strong and great pirate and it might’ve been the same all down the line or it could’ve been picked up at some arbitrary store. But what mattered was that it was once owned by a strong and great pirate with a dream and given to another strong and great pirate with an even bigger dream and both of their strengths and dreams and greatness must have seeped into it because Nami never felt as protected or as powerful and she never thought with such clarity than she had when she first wore it.
And now it was a symbol. A symbol for him and his pirates and all their dreams and that goofy skull smirked down under that hat and it was a reminder that their dreams were crazy and they were insane but that hat was a representation of their strength and their single mindedness.
It was probably silly to think of that hat as being so important except that it was. It represented them and their dreams and their love of each other and no one would let anything happen to that hat because it was important to them all.
Nami, claiming to be tired of chasing down his hat in any passing gale, had offered to sew a string to it. It worked for the most part and Luffy ran around the ship for the rest of the day, yelling at the rest of the crew to see how his hat couldn’t fly away anymore.
But that didn’t stop Luffy from giving her his hat from time to time. And being entrusted with his hat- their symbol –was an honor Nami was proud to perform.
