After what I've seen in both the mange and anime I have come to the conclusion that Ayumu needs love like whoa.
Title: The Worlds Between
Fandom: Peacemaker Kurogane
Rating: G
Word Count: 540
Characters: Tatsunosuke, Ayumu
Summary: Their actions are different but their feelings are the same.
When Tatsu wakes in the mornings he checks on Tetsu, tucking him in where he kicked off the blankets and drops a kiss on the boy’s forehead. He smiles at the grouching Shinsengumi and hush up the louder ones, lying about a headache. When he wakes in the mornings Ayumu is already awake and cooking. She hums some long lost song to herself as she buses about the pots and thinks about the kimonos that need mending or washing. Sometimes, if she has enough money saved away, she’ll consider buying a new comb that would accent the curve of her neck or more makeup to wear.
In the late morning, Tatsu hunches over a desk. One hand has an abacus, the other scribble notes on a paper, going through equations before placing them in the text as he tries to hear and ignore the shouts from outside. They are among demons, but the demons watch out for each other. There’s no reason for him to worry. Late mornings see Ayumu hanging up the laundry on her own. Lunch will be a little late but she doesn’t mind and no one ever complains about it. At least out here, right now, she can watch how a boy grows up and almost forgets that she’s already missed it.
The afternoons after lunch are the most lively and less work gets done. Tatsu shouts and flails and is reprimanded for skipping out on his duties but it will just happen again tomorrow and the day after. Ayumu sometimes listens to the lectures behind the doors in those afternoons. She thinks he’s the luckiest man in the world.
When Tetsu drags himself to dinner after dusk, Tatsu yells at the boy for neglecting his page duties and causing trouble and where did he get that scrape this time? He watches Tetsu’s food more carefully than his own and fends off thieving chopsticks best he can. Tetsu goes to bed full, having eaten everything that was given to him. Tatsu, though he’d eaten less, ruffles Tetsu’s hair and gets a grumble as a reward. After dusk, after everyone else eats, Ayumu leaves a tray of food in a room. Sometimes it’s empty, sometimes it’s not, but the dishes always find their way to the sink by morning and that’s all she can ask for.
At night, Tatsu props himself up against the linen closet and bids goodnight to everyone. The other Shinsengumi just think he’s strange to sleep sitting up and cracking his neck all day, but it just means more room on the floor for them. Some nights, even with that invaluable presence at his back, Tatsu can’t sleep. He goes to the kitchen and helps Ayumu with the dishes if there were still some to clean and she laughs when he talks about what Tetsu did today. Sometimes they talk until late, until Tatsu excuses himself to sleep and Ayumu goes back to her own empty room. She sits quietly as the night wears on and waits until there’s movement in the room next to hers and still she hears the movement still and breathing even. Only then she finally lies down and knows that this is the closest she will ever get.
