She didn’t know why she went to him that night. Or any night, really. She didn’t scare easily, even less when it came to her father. But sometimes something would happen during his screaming and beating that made her afraid. And somehow the only idea that gave her any sense of comfort was seeing Ikkaku.

Wholly single-minded, too straightforward to be deceptive, he was safe and he was strong and even if he wasn’t there, the 11th division was close-knit enough to know not to turn her away and kept her presence silent.

It was nearing early morning when the window finally slid back. Arms draped over the sill and Ikkaku eventually pulled his chin up. A bleary eye struggled to focus on her.

“…Nemu?” He mumbled, exhausted from a week of field training. “What’s the matter?”

She hated imposing. Especially when she knew he needed the rest. “I couldn’t sleep.”

He never asked questions. Not about the fresh bruises on her face or the stiffness in her arms or frightened look in the back of her eyes. He’d just hold out his hand and help her through the window.

Ikkaku would drag his bedding to the darkest corner, the one by the door. He’d half sit, half prop himself against the wall, sword resting against his shoulder. Nemu didn’t know if he always slept with his sword at hand or if he thought she was in some sort of danger. But she’d slip into his covers, still warm from his body and smelling like sweat and earth and musk. Curling in on herself and the scent, Nemu would barely remember falling asleep.

He’d still be there in the mornings, still sitting next to her, sword at his shoulder, even though she’d sometimes sleep until noon and he’d get in trouble for missing his morning duties. But Ikkaku would just tell her he never had the heart to wake her up. And for waking him up in the middle of the night and taking over his bed the least she could do would be to tell him ‘good morning’ with a smile.

And even if she’d get yelled at and beaten for being late those mornings, she never minded. Not when she still had his scent in her hair and his smile chasing her fear away.
