Summary: The price of buying.
“Hey.”
He didn’t stop pushing his cart.
“Hey, hold on!”
He kept pushing.
“C’mon! I wanna buy something!”
The cart stopped.
“Ha! Finally!” A young man came to a stop, panting a little. He flashed a grin at the merchant. “I’ve been chasing you all the way from the main square!”
The merchant ignored him and flipped the canvas from the cart. “What do you want?” He asked flatly.
“Aw, don’t be like that!” He peered at the merchant closely. “I’ve seen you around before, haven’t I?”
The other man’s eyes darted from under the brim of his cap. “…I don’t know what you mean.”
“Sure I have! You’re just wearing that hat, is all. Take it off.”
He held the brim down with both hands. “…no.”
“Come on, take it off!”
“No.”
“If you don’t take it off, I won’t buy anything.”
The merchant sneered. “Then don’t buy anything.”
The young man pouted at him. “Don’t be like that. I’ll buy enough to get you in an inn tonight, I promise. I just got back from a quest and I’m out of all sorts of supplies.”
He even held out a fat pouch to prove it. The merchant looked at warily, remembering that he hadn’t had a place to sleep in two weeks or something to eat for almost three days. Slowly, he took the hat off. His long ears dangled in front of his face.
The man laughed. Not the kind of laugh he general heard- disdainful and cruel –but like he was actually happy. Lightly a hand tugged on an ear, straightening where it had been scrunched under a tiny hat all day.
“Much better!” He said. And proceeded to nearly deplete the merchant’s inventory. Loaded up with supplies, the man smiled and waved. “If you’re still not wearing a hat when I come back from my next quest, I’ll buy even more from you! Promise!”
When the merchant moved on from the alley, the only thing marking the exchange was an abandoned hat.
