Title: A Hypothetical Encounter Between Ten Ten and Tsunade
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: PG
Word Count: 515
Characters: Ten Ten, Tsunade
Summary: Spoilers on Tsunade's apprentice. The one that was overlooked.
It had been a long day and an even longer hour losing the ANBU assigned to guard her. She was, after all, the Fifth, the Hokage and, to top it off, a Sannin. It would still be a while yet before someone could get at her without a fight.
So, stretching out in her newly earned freedom, Tsunade decided she was going to celebrate by drinking. And maybe gambling. Just a little.
She will admit, though, that she was a little surprised to see someone waiting for her at her favorite establishment.
“Tsunade-sama.” A young girl said quietly, bowing low.
Being addressed by name and not title? Tsunade wondered to herself. Either this kid was almost as ballsy as the fox brat or this was nothing but personal.
“I’m sorry.” She said in reply. “I don’t know your name.”
“Ten Ten.” The girl said. “I’m on the same team with Rock Lee and Neji. They both came back from a mission recently.”
“I remember them.”
“Tsunade-sama…” Ten Ten’s fingers clenched against her pants and the pain she had schooled for hours waiting was running tremors through her. “Tsunade-sama…”
Tsunade’s brown eyes darkened, hearing the lacing emotion in the young girl.
“Why?” Her voice finally broke and tears that she was mortified at were streaming down her face. “Why did you pick Sakura?” She sniffed, too proud to wipe her cheeks dry. “I’ve admired you since I was in the academy! I wanted nothing more than to grow up just like you! I used to dream so much about being your apprentice- but everyone said you'd never come back! But… you did! You came back and you were just as amazing and wonderful like the legends and I thought I’d do anything so that you’d notice me! That you’d make me your apprentice and I was so, so happy, but…”
Tsunade took the five steps that let her place a gentle hand on top Ten Ten’s head.
“It was my dream,” Ten Ten hiccupped, “to be as good a woman as you…”
“Ten Ten.” She said softly. “Neji and Lee are both very strong. They have a clear sense of themselves and what’s ahead of them. You know what you want out of yourself and what needs to be done to do it. That is why you three are teammates. Sakura needs my tutelage because the skills I can give to her will become paramount in her future. What she learns from me will be what saves the people she holds most important.”
She bent slightly, lifting Ten Ten’s flushed face up by the chin. “But the path you walk is different than hers. I’m old, and I still sometimes tremble at the sight of blood. But you’re strong and you’re brave. And the fact that you can stand so proudly next to the teammates you have proves that we’re too different to be alike.” Tsunade smiled down at Ten Ten, drying her tears with the pad of warm fingers. “You will be a better woman than me.”
