Title: Standing Fire
Fandom: Bleach
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 340
Characters: Ishida and his grandfather. And a bit of Mayuri at the end.
Summary: Spoiler of book 14. I blame this on recently being on the rifle range. Dialogue at the end taken from Rockin’ Future 7 and manipulated for drabble purposes only.

Uryuu’s hands looked so small in the glow of his bow. “Like this?” He asked, struggling with his grip.

“Don’t force it.” His grandfather said, adjusting the boy’s hold. “Let it come to you naturally.”

Uryuu closed his eyes and took a breath. When he opened them again, his aim had shifted. “It’s not where it’s supposed to be!” He whined.

“This position will exhaust you quickly. Even if you don’t feel it, it strains your muscles.” Gentle hands lowered Uryuu’s arms, keeping the bow at ready. “If you don’t feel confident in shooting the first few seconds, relax and try again.”

All morning and most of the afternoon Uryuu tried to understand the basic concepts of aiming and shooting. But each time he always did something wrong. Frowning at the makeshift target, the little boy was ready to give up his heritage entirely.

“You’re looking at the target.” His grandfather’s sudden voice startled him. “Focus only on the tip of the arrow. When you see your tip centered on your target, you will always hit it.”

“I’m trying but it’s so hard!”

Laughing like dry leaves in autumn, he stroked Uryuu’s hair gently. “Practice, Uryuu. It is about practice.”

“The Quincy were already rare by the time I became division captain. I’d delay the Shinigami assigned to aid them so their souls could be used for research.” Kurotsuchi’s half moon smile seemed to glow on his dark face. “The last one was some pathetic old man. Kept crying out some brat’s name.”

Something was tearing at Ishida’s brain and his whole body burned. His grandfather’s bloody face etched into his eyes and seared his heart. “Uryuu… Ishida Uryuu…” His whole body wailed with pressure and agony but the pain never reached Ishida’s mind. Not where it lay wrapped up in hate and anger that shadowed his face.

“He was my teacher and my grandfather.” He spat at the Shinigami’s feet. “That day he died, I pledged, on my pride as a Quincy, that I would never miss again.”

I like this. But I must point out that Ishida's grandfather wouldn't have refferred to him by his last name.

....You're absolutely right. Having referred to him as 'Ishida' for so long, I've utterly forgotten that's his last name><;; *change*

Ishida-fic love! But I think the tense is wrong in the last sentence: "That day he died, I pledge, on my pride as a Quincy, that I would never miss again." Pledged? Otherwise, it's got a lot of impact.
