Hey look- a drabble that doesn't feature Mick! It's about him anyway. Just a little something I've been meaning to write to better explain just where Amaya got a shuriken when Mick failed to pick one up.
Title: A Better Apology
Fandom: Legends of Tomorrow
Rating: PG
Word Count: 473
Characters: Sara, Amaya
Summary: Missing scene from 2x03, right before Amaya talks to Mick. Sara gives a little extra insight on their resident wildcard.
"You look like you're about to face the firing squad."
Amaya's mouth twisted, furthering the comparison. "I may have been overly quick in judging Rory. It's only fair that I apologize to him."
That made Sara give a satisfied grin, crossing her arms. "Glad to hear it. Told you he wasn't as bad as he seemed."
Though grudgingly agreeing, Amaya still defended, "It's not like he attempted to make a case for himself."
"To be fair, he also doesn't think most people's opinions are important enough to care about. Which is a feat I'm occasionally jealous of. If you're serious about it, though, don't apologize to him, he'll just blow you off. Give him this instead." Sara pulled something out of a hidden seam in her clothes. "Mick responds better to actions than words."
Amaya stared at the small item oddly, "What is it?"
"It's a shuriken- a ninja throwing star. Might look fancy but they're expendable because it's tough to find them once they're thrown. I'm betting Mick didn't have a chance to pick one up after his fight." Especially since he had to disguise himself to sneak around the shogun's forces in time to let Sara and Amaya know reinforcements were coming.
Amaya still looked dubious. "Would he know it's yours?"
"Absolutely, it's a modern-style shuriken but it's made by authentic craftsmen. Mick's been trying to steal one off me since he found out I had 'em." At the increased dubiousness, Sara couldn't help a small chuckle. "I have a whole crate of these. It used to be a kind of game we had going on. Mick and," her words caught for a moment, "his partner would try to steal some and I'd catch them." Sara flipped the shuriken between her fingers, melancholic edge to an otherwise fond smile. She handed the star out to Amaya. "Surviving a solo battle against a swarm of ninjas is an accomplishment, even by League standards. He deserves a better souvenir than ill-fitting pajamas." The fact he managed to find a ninja with the height and breadth to accommodate Mick even badly was a shock. "He'll know it's mine but he won't care."
As she took the shuriken, Amaya's eyes narrowed. "This 'partner'...?"
Sara barely held back a grimace. "He was one of us and he sacrificed his life for us. The loss hit all of us hard but," she shrugged, "he was Mick's partner for years. That's not something anyone'll get over easily, if ever."
She gave this new information the consideration it deserved. "Rory isn't the simple thug he makes himself out to be."
"He puts on a good show and he likes trolling people- purposefully being an ass," she clarified, "but in my experience, there's very little about Mick that's as straightforward as it seems."
Amaya hummed. "I'll keep that in mind."
