Jumping the timeline in Jinsei Apts AU. This takes place some time in the future, well after the kids are born and Hanzo and Kuai Liang have been living together for a number of years. I decided to make Kuai Liang a firefighter because there was only so long I could resist the fact that Steve Blum’s Sub-Zero voice is very close to his Heatwave voice before I caved. Besides, firefighter is the closest he’s going to get to shooting water out his knuckles chucking iceballs at people’s heads. And also Smoke is a firefighter because of course he is.

This idea came about when I realized I never referenced Kuai Liang’s scar (i’m like 80% certain i haven’t). And also because I loved everything Bi Han does in this.

Summary: A fire response ends up with Kuai Liang in the hospital.

If asked later, Hanzo wouldn’t be able to remember how he got there or anything beyond sitting, shaking, as he stared off into space. He couldn’t remember much of anything after Stryker knocked on his door and told him Kuai Liang had been taken to the hospital.

(Sareena had driven him, he’d realize later, after the visit when she drove him and Bi Han back to the apartment complex where Stryker sat up with him and talked until Hanzo fell asleep on the couch- he’d regret later, after all of Stryker’s thoughtfulness, that he hadn’t done more back when Kabal had been hospitalized.)

There were other people in the waiting room, the families and friends of the other two injured firefighters and whoever else was unfortunate enough to need emergency care during the early evening. A nurse eventually came up to them, explaining Kuai Liang’s injuries and that he’d survive but needed to be kept under observation to ensure there were no complications. “He’s conscious but weak and somewhat disoriented. Right now we’re limiting his visitors to just family.”

Hanzo fisted his hands, fighting back the urge to charge down the hall and see who tried to stop him. “What’re you waiting for?” Bi Han nearly shoved Hanzo out of his chair. “Go check on your little brother, Bi Han.”

Hanzo sat and stared at him until Sareena cleared her throat, giving him a pointed look. “R-Right. Yes. Um, thank you.”

The nurse led the way, pushing open a door an announcing quietly, “You have a visitor,” before just as quietly leaving the two alone.

Kuai Liang, laying in bed, lifted his chin slightly, “Who is it?”

“It’s me.”

“Hanzo?” He turned his head in rough approximation of Hanzo’s direction and the older man got his first look at the damage- the red skin slathered with gel, the bandages patching the worst of the burns. But it was the bandages wrapped around the top half of his head that left him sucking in an audible breath, frozen at the door. Kuai Liang’s mouth flattened into a thin, trembling line. He sat up, reaching out and only feeling empty air. He reached out again, hand clutching nothing desperately. “Hanzo?”

“Baby,” he crossed to the bed in two long strides, hands shaking as he held Kuai Liang’s face, “your eyes…”

“Baby?” Though his tone was going for light, his voice was weak and tight in his throat, “I must look pretty bad if you’re calling me that.” He tried to pretend his breathing wasn’t hard, covering Hanzo’s hands with his own. “Did they shave me?”

A hand stroked his bare cheek, the small patch that was still pale and unmarred. “Yes.”

“Feels weird.” Hanzo pressed a kiss to the spot. “Feels really weird.”

“Are you okay?”

“Eyes and throat itch. ‘Sides from that, just feel foggy. Must’ve gave me the good stuff.” There was a soft sight and a long moment of silence. Kuai Liang tightened his hold on Hanzo’s hands, voice tiny, “Say something.”

“I love you.” He wrapped the younger man into a hug, gentle but close. “I was so scared.”

“I’m scared, too.” His grip was a little too tight but Hanzo didn’t care. “What if I never see you again?”

“I’ll take care of you. I promise.”

“Please don’t leave me.”

“Never.”

The door opened and the nurse stood there looking haggard, “Please don’t impersonate family members.”

Kuai Liang pulled back and Hanzo could only imagine the expression he had under the bandages. “You told them you’re Bi Han?”

“Not his fault they think all Asians look the same,” the actual Bi Han said, strolling in and ignoring the strained look of neutrality on the nurse’s face. He put a hand to Kuai Liang’s hair, ruffling the sweat-dried strands sticking up wildly through the bandages. “You alright, Didi?”

He inclined his head into Bi Han’s touch, “I’ve been better.”

“Hey, kiddo.”

He jumped slightly as the bed dipped slightly behind him, “Sareena?”

She hugged him, leaning lightly against his back, “You gave us a helluva scare.”

“Sorry.”

“What are you all doing here?” Hanzo asked, noting that the nurse left without kicking anyone out. “I thought only family was allowed in.”

“I straightened things out,” Tomas announced from the doorway, still wearing his gear though he’d obviously washed up a bit. “Bullshit that a firefighter gets injured in the line of duty and can’t have his partner with him. Though maybe if you filed for some kind of domestic partnership, this won’t be an issue.”

Kuai Liang groaned, looking like he’d flop back on the bed like a child if he weren’t still clinging to Hanzo’s arms. “Do you really have to give me this lecture now?”

“I’ll wait until you can retain it better.” Tomas stood by the foot of the bed, just looking at his best friend for a moment. “Initial investigations says the explosion was caused by fertilizer being stored in the garage, it’s what gave your eyes and lungs chemical burn.” Kuai Liang hissed at the news. “Doctors are pretty confident it won’t cause permanent damage, they’re mostly worried about the blow to the head you got. Mostly superficial but deep enough it chipped the orbital bone in your brow. They can’t tell if it damaged your eye until the burn heals.”

Throughout the news, Kuai Liang sank deeper into Hanzo’s arms, trying to hide in his chest while Hanzo and Sareena held him, making soft, soothing noises.

“Least you won’t have to worry if it is permanent. Your boytoy’s got plenty of experience dealing with the blind,” Bi Han said casually, but the way he squeezed his little brother’s shoulder said everything he didn’t.

“All the respect in the world for Kenshi, but I’d prefer to see.”

“If the worst does come to pass,” Hanzo’s fingers brushed lightly over the bandages, “I would gladly assist you.”

“You’d really be okay with going through all that again?”

“For you? Again and always. Though it isn’t as much an ordeal as you make it out to be.”

“Hanzo…” Kuai Liang tilted his chin up, lips parted slightly and Hanzo leaned in, their noses brushing together-

“Okay, visiting hours are over.” Bi Han ruffled Kuai Liang’s hair again, hard enough to make him duck away from Hanzo. “We’ll wait outside until you’re done.”

Sareena and Tomas snorted at him but obligingly said their farewells, hugging Kuai Liang and promising to return tomorrow. Once the door clicked shut, Kuai Liang asked, “Are they gone?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Now,” he reached forward, hand clumsy on Hanzo’s jaw but giving him the point of reference he needed to lean in, “where were we.”
