Summary: Speculative post-Dressrossa fic. Law is constantly shocked by what the hell he'd gotten himself into.
They hadn't even gotten off the gangplank before a tear-eyed, snot-nosed missile of fur barreled into him with a blubbering cry of, "Captain!" to which Law responded with great dignity, "Owowowow". Straw Hat (damn him) and his crew (damn them) just shuffled by, snickering while Bepo swung Law around crying, "I'm sorry!"
"If you're sorry than put me down!" Law snapped, inhaling hot, sweaty fur at the same time and coughing so hard his already strained ribs started hurting. "Jean Bart!"
"Sorry, Captain," the man said with his arms full of other Heart crew members trying to get at their captain like a pack of lonely puppies, "not enough hands at the moment."
Law was saved by, of all people, Straw Hat's transforming doctor. "He's hurt! I need to check up on him!" Law let the little guy lead him to a seat and prod at him because if he didn't, Bepo and the others would've dogpiled him.
Straw Hat had already managed to sniff out some food, stuffing his cheeks as he said, "I was wondering what happened to your crew."
"He said it was family business and it was too dangerous for us to get involved," Penguin said before rounding on Law with tears in his eyes and a wobble at his lips. "But then you went and allied with the Straw Hats and everything was suddenly going down but you told us you'd contact us first and we were so worried, Captain!" He probably would've kicked off the soggy group hug of relief if Jean Bart hadn't grabbed him by the collar.
"I didn't originally plan any alliance, but the circumstances changed." It worked out for the better: it probably would've taken months more before Law had all the pieces set up to do what needed to be done alone. "Unfortunately, the outcome's changed as well. With Doflamingo completely out of the picture, we've just brought an angry Kaido down on our heads."
His crew and the Straw Hats that had left early looked about ready to have heartattacks. The navigator began sobbing into her hand. "Another one? How are we supposed to deal with two Emperors at the same time?"
Law could feel the beginnings of a cold sweat prickling along his hairline. "What do you mean two?"
"Luffy got Big Mom mad at him. She even tried to take Caesar before we left Dressrossa."
"Why didn't you tell me about this?" He snapped at Straw Hat who nonchalantly pulled a fishbone from his throat.
"Eh. You said you wanted to take on an Emperor anyway so I didn't think another one would make a difference."
"Not at the same time!"
Straw Hat just laughed, kicking his heels against his seat. "That's okay. Now that we have your crew, we'll be able to deal with both of them!"
Law slapped a hand to his face, mainly because he realized he was already going through what he knew about Big Mom: her territory, contacts, business associates, and trying to plan how to get information for all the things they didn't yet know. "Big Mom wasn't part of the agreement."
"But you'll help us out anyway, right, Torao? We're friends, after all!"
He tried to bury his face deeper into his hand and sighed. Eustass had been harassing Big Mom's ships lately, maybe his own newly formed alliance would distract her for a while. "I guess I owe you for helping me with Doflamingo."
"Great! Sanji! We need lots of meat! We need to celebrate our alliance and victory!"
A cheer went up from both crews, everyone running around to get the festivities started. Jean Bart leaned down behind Law and said lowly, "Is a party a good idea right now? If Kaido and Big Mom are after us..."
Law watched as Straw Hat pestered Bepo, Penguin and Shachi trying to endear themselves to the Straw Hat ladies and all the familiar idiosyncrasies of his crew that had been a lonely ache in his chest for months. "Let 'em be. There's no stopping Straw Hat from partying anyway." No doubt about it, Straw Hat was the one taking advantage of him in this alliance.
