Summary: Wash isn't entirely certain how to deal with CT's gender fluidity.

Wash sat diligently at the table, eyeing the huge hardcovers stacked haphazardly before him. He'd never imagined he'd be a newspaper reporter (even if it was merely a school paper) but there he was, trying to think about the best way to approach his assigned subject. A book slammed onto the table with an I-weigh-five-pounds! kind of thud. Wash's research partner took the seat next to him, flipping open the huge tomb that was probably as big as her torso.

"Well," CT said, "let's get started then."

He had to bite his lip to keep from letting his eyes drift up from the page. Today CT was wearing a shirt that showed off an awful lot of slender shoulders and Wash's attention kept getting caught on the little silver charm on the black cord that rested in the hollow of her collarbone. He didn't allow himself to look long enough to figure out what exactly it was even though his curiosity was killing him.

Wash was so caught up in trying not to get distracted that he had absolutely no idea how long CT had her hand laid out over the page he was supposed to be reading. When he looked at her she seemed rather unamused but his heart double-timed anyway. "Um," he said intelligently, "yes?"

"You know, there seems to be this fifty-fifty chance that, whenever we work together, you'll either be useful and insightful, or shy and distracted." CT's usual earstud was replaced by a shiny dangly thing that brushed against her neck when she tilted her head. "And it always seems to happen when I'm a girl."

"That's just- I don't know what you're talking about." Wash gingerly inched his book out from under her hand, wanting to hide behind it. He, of course, knew exactly what she was talking about and had absolutely no explanation for it himself. He knew that CT was always a girl (biologically speaking) but, for some reason, when she dressed like a boy he had no problems talking to her. When she dressed as a girl, however, Wash found himself tripping over his words and getting his thoughts in a tangled mess. He thought she was attractive regardless but there was just something about seeing CT in skirts or with lipliner accenting the fully bow of her lips that… just…

"And you're staring at me again."

He hastily averted his eyes into a block of text and newsprint photo. "Sorry! We-we should get to work. Epsilon's expecting our notes for this assignment tomorrow afternoon."

There was a long stretch of silence as Wash resolutely did not look up and eventually CT just sighed. "Fine." From the corner of his eye he could see the decisive flick of her wrist and delicate angle of her fingers as she flipped her own book open.

They spent the rest of the day in silence.
