Characters: Koshino, Sendoh
Summary: Koshino finally gets why Sendoh keeps dragging him out.

Fingers tapped rapid-fire against an upright knee, a blur of movement that was an inadequate outlet for the steady build up of tension. Koshino glanced at the messenger bag by his hip before glaring sidelong at the teen next to him. Despite the carefree smile and distant eyes, Koshino knew he was being watched and he knew if he tried to grab his workbook, Sendoh would yank it out of his grip and sit on it. Just like he did with Koshino's textbook, notebook and planner.

I could shove him over, the agitated boy thought. I could shove him into the water, grab my stuff and jack his bike. That'll teach Sendoh to drag me out to waste my time on a Sunday.

"Ne, Koshino," Sendoh drawled as his fishing pole bobbed, "your temper is scaring away all the fish."

"And whose fault is that?" Came the sharp retort. "You're the one not letting me get any work done."

"You're always so busy. Every time I see you you're working or studying or practicing. You never take a break."

"I like being productive," Koshino said dryly.

Sendoh's grin widened, "I noticed. You're productive enough for two. Guess that means I have to relax enough for two."

There was a dismissive snort, "You are not blaming me for that fact that you're a slacker."

Sendoh reeled in his line, setting his pole aside and Koshino was immensely relieved at the prospect that they were finally leaving. But Sendoh didn't get up. Instead, he turned around just enough to press a finger to Koshino's forehead and push him onto his back.

"Wha-hey!"

"C'mon, Koshino. You're going to give me a stress ulcer at this rate."

"Sendoh-"

"Like you haven't already finished all your work. I know you as well as you know me." Sendoh lay back on the grass, hands cushioning his head and legs crossed at the ankles over Koshino's books. "Enjoy the beautiful day."

Koshino growled, arms crossed over his chest and glaring up at the sky as if he blamed it for inflicting Sendoh on him.

The tension was building up again and Koshino blurted out, "This is a waste of time!"

"Because you're not doing anything?"

"Yes!"

"And what would you be doing? Studying?"

"Well why not? Exams aren't too far away, you know."

"I know. And then we'll only have two terms left until we begin our third year."

Something in the way Sendoh said that made Koshino pause. Their high school years were practically half over already and that thought came as sort of a surprise to the shorter teen. Taoka-sensei and Uozumi were already discussing the possibility of Sendoh becoming next team captain in the spring- and Koshino being vice-captain because someone had to make sure Sendoh was being properly responsible -and that would take up more time than the basketball club already did. And the following spring, both would have to step down from the team to focus on graduating and moving on to university or whatever...

Koshino actually had no idea what Sendoh was planning to do after high school. He assumed it would be keep playing basketball. He didn't know where but chances were it wouldn't be the same place Koshino would end up getting into. Wherever it was, Koshino hoped there was a place for Sendoh to fish nearby and plenty of beautiful days for him to enjoy.

"You can have your books back if you want."

Koshino turned to find his best friend looking at him with a hint of resignation. Koshino realized he was still frowning. He quickly smoothed out his expression and said, "No, no- this is fine."

Sendoh smiled brightly. "Alright, then."

They lay silently, side by side. Then Koshino suddenly said, "Is it just me or does that cloud look like Fukuda's hair?"

"What?" He heard Sendoh's head tilting, trying to find the cloud in question. "Which one?"

"That one, right there."

"Looks more like an octopus to me."

"What- you don't think his hair looks like an octopus?"

"It's not that bad- you're so mean, Koshino."

They laughed and argued and talked until the sun hung low and hunger made them get up and even though nothing got done it was still a treasured day. They didn't have too many left.
