Summary: Mother's Day with the family we never knew.
"You have everything?"
"Yeah, I think so."
"Last chance, you know. There's no backing out."
"I know."
"Ready?"
"I... I think so. This is okay, right? She'll be happy... right?"
"She'll love it and she'll be happy. I promise. But you understand what this means for you, right?"
"I know," then, more confidently, "I know. She's not a replacement, but that doesn't mean she isn't just as important to me."
Ralph grinned broadly. "Good answer." The door opened with only the slightest of noises and, on the right side of the four poster bed, as always, Sue lay curled and still asleep. Ralph urged softly, "Go ahead, sweetie."
Quiet feet padded toward the bed and a hand, very tentatively, shook a bare shoulder. "Sue? Wake up, Sue."
"Hmmm?" Lashes slowly parted, trying to focus through the morning sun and lingering sleep. Sue rolled to her back and stretched. "Traci? What is it, honey?"
A small box was dropped rather unceremoniously on Sue's lap. Sleep now almost entirely gone, Sue looked at the girl curiously. "What's this?"
Traci bit her lip, looked up with big eyes and quietly said, "Happy Mother's Day, Sue."
Sue looked at Traci and the five long years of watching a lost, brokenhearted little girl turn into a vivacious, brilliant young woman hit her all at once. Sue's lip trembled and her eyes filled with tears. "Oh, Traci," she swept the girl into her arms, holding her tight and kissing the crown of her head. "You wonderful, amazing little sweetheart." Her tears plopped quietly into Traci's hair and Traci's arms wrapped just as tightly around Sue. "You're the daughter I always wanted."
Ralph leaning against the door caught Sue's eye. She smiled, brilliant through her tears, at him and mouthed 'I love you'.
Ralph just smiled back and watched quietly, absolutely in love with both his ladies.
