Summary: More AU Ted-n-Mike! The boys prepare for college. Separately.
As much as Mike was looking forward to going out into the world, he wasn't looking forward to college. Not so much the college years itself as it was leaving behind everyone and everything he knew. It was scary. And kind of depressing. Of course he felt some pride knowing Michelle had an internship as a photographer for a travel magazine- seeing the world had always been her dream. What depressed Mike was that he had a full football scholarship to Virginia Tech. And Ted was going to MIT.
Mike dreaded graduation day. He didn't want to leave his best friend.
Ted rolled over, abandoning his video game to toss an arm over Mike's waist. "Stop fretting, it's just college."
"Hmph."
"Do you seriously want me to be your mother?" Ted cooed and stroked Mike's hair. "You'll be fine, sweetie. You'll make lots of nice friends, learn all sorts of neat things and have drinking binges every weekend. There's nothing to be worried about."
"Nrrr."
"Seriously, though." Ted hooked a leg behind one of Mike's knees, pressing up against his side and his hand ran through Mike's hair, down his neck and chest to where his shirt was riding up, palming the warm, bared skin. "It's not the end of the world and Massachusetts isn't all that far. I can drive down on long weekends and breaks and there's always IM and the phone." He brushed light kisses over Mike's jaw, voice subdued to match Mike's mood. "You won't miss me."
Ted always tried to use sex to cheer Mike up those days. Not that Mike was complaining, but it didn't address the problem and a week before graduation it felt like he was anticipating an amputation. He had to bully himself through his days when all he really wanted to do was curl around Ted and pretend the rest of the world didn't exist. What made it all worse was the fact it really didn't seem like Ted much cared.
Mike's throat threatened to close up as he unlocked the door to Ted's house and walked in (considering how often he stayed over, it only seemed natural to Ted to give him the spare key). Ted was sitting on the couch, watching something Mike didn't care to look at, and craned his head back at the sound of footsteps. "Hey, Mikey. Got something to show you," as Mike stood behind him, Ted flipped up a letter. "Here."
"What's this?"
"Acceptance letter."
Mike fumed lightly. "I already know you got accepted."
"Read it."
Rolling his eyes, Mike snatched the letter. He didn't have to read a thing- it was all there in the letter head.
Mouth working silently for a moment, he managed to stutter out, "Y-You applied to Virginia Tech?"
Ted shrugged, grin working across his lips. "Someone's gotta keep you outta trouble. Or get you into it, I haven't figured out which yet."
Mike vaulted over the couch, straddling Ted's lap and kissing him like he was drowning. "I love you," he said, then paused when he realized he really meant it. "I'm not being facetious. I really love you."
"I'm impressed- you haven't forgotten all those SAT words yet."
"You're an ass," Mike said even as he ground down on Ted's lap. Ted couldn't help laughing, pulling Mike down for another kiss.
"I thought maybe you wanted some space. Get away for a bit, have a real life without me around," before Mike could berate someone so smart for being so dumb, Ted admitted, "I didn't want to leave you and when I realized you didn't want to, either..." He kissed Mike softly, shyly, and Mike couldn't help whimpering a little. "Love you."
The words rushed through Mike's body and it was like it had lifted some oppressive weight from his heart he hadn't even known was there. He tugged roughly at Ted's shirt, nipping at his jaw between saying, "Love you more when you're naked."
"I'm okay with that."
