Rip really had to hand it to Michelle- if nothing else, she proved to be both a quick learner and rather adaptable. Of course she was far more hesitant to use violence where an experienced hero like her brother wouldn’t, but sometimes discretion and subtlety were better suited for the situation. Well, Rip mused to himself, Aunt Shel was the one that kept pressing Rip to not take direct action unless he absolutely had to.
She still needed more experience with fighting though, as the skirmish that damaged the time sphere’s exterior proved. Just cosmetic damage, yes, but it wouldn’t have happened if Michelle had any confidence in her fighting ability or the offensive capabilities of her suit. They’d have to fix that, Rip knew. The only question was how. Rip already knew that Aunt Shel’s fighting style was too different from his own and Booster would be more likely to fight his more vulnerable sister’s battles at the first sign of her faltering than letting her grow. Ted could be a possibility if he came back to the time lab and agreed. Asides from that, Rip had to admit that he was rather limited in his current-time superhero connection and, if he continued to be completely honest, he didn’t know if it was a good idea to let other current-time superheroes know about her- especially since the few that knew of her also believed she died so long ago.
Rip sat back on his heels, taking a moment to take pull his goggles off and wipe the sweat from his forehead with the back of a wrist. Cosmetic damage or not it was never a good idea to chance any loose paneling in the timestream and brazing the damaged joint back on to the delicate sensory panels of the sphere was long work. But it gave Rip time to think.
Booster definitely had the potential to become the man that Rip knew as his father, the only problem was that Booster was still struggling to reconcile his duty as Time Master with his instincts as a hero. The only thing that could solve that was more experience at the job. Ted was a blank card- how he got from Ted Kord to the Inventor was something Rip didn’t know in the least and trying to research it in his spare time yielded no real results. That did not make Rip happy. Michelle, though, need experience and time and confidence. All the things that she needed, Rip didn’t think she’d be able to adequately get around Booster and even Rip himself and that made Rip realize that, as much as he loved and adored and looked up to his aunt, he didn’t know how she got from this young version of her to the one Rip knew.
With a heavy sigh and scrubbing at his face, Rip groused out, “Time travel, you can really be a bitch some time.”
“Oh, you’re back!”
Rip craned his head back, looking at Michelle in confusion. “I wasn’t aware that I was gone.”
“Sorry, Rip. Just from behind and with the goggles and your hair tousled like that, you looked like Ted,” she smiled sheepishly. “Thought he and Mikey finally came back. How much longer do you think they’ll be?”
“Skeets said Booster dropped a line a bit ago, said it shouldn’t take too much longer, but if we needed him, Booster would come back earlier.”
“Oh, okay.”
“You sound disappointed.”
Michelle opened her mouth, then shut it quickly, as if worried she inadvertently insulted Rip. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I... there’s really no way to get out of this without sounding like a complete jerk, is there?”
Rip couldn’t help a crooked smirk. “I don’t think so.”
With an exaggerated sigh, Michelle flopped into a nearby seat, spinning in it idly for a moment. “I know between the three of us we’ve got the time thing covered, but it would be nice having Mikey back to take some of the load off again. I don’t mind doing all the menial missions and the really intensive missions you do doesn’t happen too often, but it would be nice to relax for a bit, you know?”
The look she got was practically dumbfounded. “You want a vacation?”
“You look like you’ve never heard of the word before.”
It may as well have been. To Rip, vacation was the time spent waiting for the next big temporal crisis. “Well,” he said slowly, feeling the idea out, “I suppose you could argue with Booster that the time he spent at the Watchtower was his vacation, so it’s only fair that you get your own.”
“Knowing Mikey he’ll make an excuse that because he was stuck there, it really wasn’t a vacation.”
“He wasn’t working, that’s practically the same thing, right?”
Michelle’s lips curled up. “See, I knew you weren’t all bad. You know how to bend things around to go your way, just like Ted does.”
“Well,” Rip’s own lips quirked into a nostalgic grin, remembering his lessons with Inventor and how he kept verbally twisting Rip’s words until he learned to keep up, “I learned from the best.”
“So you’re okay with it, right?”
“If it’s what you need, I don’t see why not. When Booster gets back, though, we’ll have to discuss it a bit more in depth. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea for you to go off on your own with little knowledge of the time and no paperwork to your name.”
With access to a time machine, getting Michele official documents wouldn’t be too difficult. It was amazing that Booster could just make an appearance as an undocumented meta with no government repercussions. Of course, saving the President of the United States and riding on the coattails of Superman’s undocumented and altruistic appearance probably helped. Bit if Michelle was determined to go out into the world, Rip was going to make sure it was done right and with as little risk as possible.
She beamed happily. “Thanks Rip! This means a lot to me!” She leaned over to give him a quick hug. She let go even quicker, realizing how sweaty he was. “Remember to shower before dinner, okay?” She made a playful face at him before bounding out, likely to tell Skeets the good news.
Rip just shook his head and pulled his goggles back on. Skills and confidence aside, it was nice to see that Aunt Shel didn’t change much.
