Title: Homemade Traditions
Fandom: DCU
Rating: G
Word Count: 668
Characters: Jaime, Scarab, Bianca (with a few others in the background)
Summary: A sweet, perhaps mildly silly Mother’s Day ficlet, if not just because Bianca is the greatest superhero’s mother ever.
/Query: What is [Jaime Reyes] doing?/
“We’re making Mother’s Day gifts for my mom,” Jaime replied, his marker carefully sweeping out lines on the card. Around him Milagro, Brenda and Paco didn’t bother to look up from their own work, too used to Jaime talking to his ‘head-voice’.
/Query: What is [Mother’s Day]?/
“It’s a day to celebrate and be thankful to our mothers or mother-figures. After this, we’re going to take Paco’s mom to lunch, then go visit Brenda’s mom’s grave.” The scarab chittered something like ‘understood’ and fell silent. Jaime continued working on his card. By the time he finished and had moved on to putting together his bouquet of flowers (petunias and carnations- Bianca’s favorites) the Scarab questioned again:
/Query: Why create rudimentary gifts when your media has advertised far superior products than flimsy paper and dying bio-material?/
Jaime had to laugh. “Dying bio-material, wow. Yeah, all that stuff they advertise is nice and all, but my mom likes the things we make because you can’t get them anywhere else and because we spend all this time and effort into making it, she knows that we were thinking of her and that we love her.”
/Then [Paco’s mother] does not warrant as much love?/
Jaime’s grin grew, “Paco has a big family. If everyone got her gifts to keep, they’d need a much bigger house, so his mom prefers just to be pampered for the day.”
The Scarab fell silent again and the four continued to put on the final touches.
/Query: [Scarab] is allowed to create gift for [Bianca Reyes]?/
“You want to make a Mother’s Day present?” The other three looked at Jaime as curious as him.
~*~*~*~
They all gathered in the front room while Alberto finished cleaning up from the breakfast he made his wife. Bianca laughed at Milgaro’s glitter-encrusted card (at least it didn’t have any Green Lantern symbols on it), pulling her daughter on to her lap for a hug and kiss. Milagro happily settled against her side as the rest of the gifts were handed out. Bianca slipped on Brenda’s flower bracelet, letting it settle near her elbow. She hugged and kissed Brenda in thanks and said, “You’ve been a joy to have, you’ve been such help around the house. Thank you.” Bianca giggled at Paco’s card and how the flowers popped out of it, giving him his own hug and kiss. “So clever, it’s a wonder what you can’t do.”
At Jaime’s gift she smiled and held him tight. “My brave, wonderful boy. I’m so glad you’re back.”
“So am I.” He rested happily in his mother’s arms for a moment before pulling back. “Hold on, you have one more present.” Jaime dug into his pocket and held out the last gift proudly.
Alberto came up and put his hands on Bianca’s shoulders. “Oh my,” he said, “that’s impressive.”
It was a glass beetle pendant (the Scarab had wanted it to be blue, but Jaime persuaded it to make it purple since that was Bianca’s favorite color) on a silver chain that Brenda had taken off an old necklace she no longer wore. Bianca, a little speechless, said, “That’s lovely, Jaime. Where did you get it?”
“Scarab made it, actually. Took me out to the desert and blasted some sand into that for you.”
“The Scarab did? Really?” She ducked her head as Alberto took the necklace and looped it around her neck and fastened it. Then she stood, turned Jaime around and placed a kiss between his shoulder blades. “Thank you, Scarab. That was very thoughtful and sweet of you.”
/Status: [Scarab] feels... accomplished?/
“You’re asking me that?” Jaime asked with a grin.
/It feels like a goal has been achieved, but no obvious mission parameters were set./
“You’re happy, Scarab,” Jaime said, reaching back to rub the skin where the Scarab was embedded, “just roll with it.”
/Understood. Status: [Scarab] feels happy. [Scarab] can haz mother?/
“Yes, Scarab can haz. Welcome to the family, buddy.”

made me crack up so hard. This was awesome. Bianca is such a fantabulous mother and the Scarab is so ridiculously adorable it hurts.
