Summary: Because Booster needs hugs and Milagro is just awesome.
After the entire Black Lantern Ted thing and finding out Jaime’s little sister had been put in the hospital by the Black Beetle (and boy did Booster feel like an utter ass not warning the kid about that), Booster decided he should go back to El Paso with Jaime to check on his family and apologize for essentially bringing all the weirdness that followed superheroes on them.
He talked to Jaime’s parents outside the hospital and took the stern talking to Bianca gave him with humility and remorse and he answered all the questions they had and promised that he would be more accessible to Jaime if he was ever needed. He talked to Jaime’s two best friends who mainly just looked at him oddly because the Booster Gold that the media talked about was quite a bit different than the one that they suddenly found themselves speaking to. Then Booster went in to see Jaime’s sister, ready to be discharged from the hospital and playing with the Ted and Booster action figures Jaime had bought for her. They were in the middle of some wacky adventure in search of nine-legged unicorns when she noticed Booster standing in the doorway. She looked at the blond figure in her hand, then the one standing just over there and she gave him a quizzical look.
“Hi,” Booster said with his most charming smile.
“You’re not going to take my brother away again, are you?” From her expression, Booster had the suspicion that if he said ‘yes’, Milagro would’ve launched herself at his face feet first.
“No. Jaime’s not going anywhere.”
“Oh, okay.” She held out the Ted figure. “Wanna play?”
“Alright.” He sat at her bedside and, for a long moment, just looked at the blue-cowled, goggle-faced figure. They did a good job with his grin, Booster thought, tracing it sadly.
“You want it?”
He looked up at Milagro, surprised. “But-“
“I can just take Jaime’s, it’s okay.” She gave him a big grin that revealed an endearing gap in her teeth and the two played until her family came to take her home. She reached her arms out toward Booster and said, “Piggyback ride?”
Her parents opened their mouths to chastise her manners but Booster cocked his head and asked, “What’s a piggyback ride?”
She looked at him as if her world was about to tip over on its side. “You don’t know?”
“No?”
Milagro stood, turned Booster around, then climbed on his back, and Booster’s arms automatically went back to keep her from falling off. Getting herself settled, Milagro said with finality, “This is a piggyback ride.”
Booster looked at her legs poking out around his sides, the little arms around his shoulders and finally up at her beaming face. “Oh. Um, okay.”
“I’m gonna make you my big-big brother,” she told him importantly, patting his hair. “Someone’s gotta teach you all the important stuff!”
Booster just smiled, following the Reyes’ out of the hospital. “I’m looking forward to it.”
