Whittled down slightly. And if only Adam checked lj again, he can actually /see/ his challenge, even if he only did it as a joke:P

The desert was too hot in the day, even in the cool interior of the castle. Cyan was lucky to be a foreigner who didn’t burn easily. The night, however chilly, suited him much better. He tugged at the high Figarian collar. Though understanding the use of it- keep off the sun and heat blasted sand in the day and keep in warmth and ward off the cool winds at night –he still found it uncomfortable and limiting. Every time he turned his head, his chin hit the collar. He wondered how Edgar managed.
After the battle, the brothers invited Cyan to join them. With no home and no people to return to, Cyan had agreed. Terra and her village would visit during winter solstice, as did Locke and Celes when their travels came by, and Setzer, always with something to brag about.
The only other one to pick up permanent residence (through Sabin’s bullying) was Gau. Edgar often joked it was because Sabin wanted a little brother of his own.
Cyan smiled to himself, wondering if his own son would’ve liked it here.
“AROOO!”
The swordsman staggered back, hand reflexively going to the hilt of his sword (which wasn’t there, he didn’t need it on the balconies). Legs hooked securely around a high rampart Gau grinned wildly, swinging upside-down with his unkempt hair a pendulum under him.
“Hey, Mr. Thou! You do okay?”
At that Cyan raised a stern eyebrow. Sheepishly, Gau flipped himself onto the balcony, straightening his clothes (over a year it took forcing him to wear them). Clearing his throat he said, “I apologize. I did not mean to interrupt.”
“It’s all right, Gau.” He smiled discreetly. Even after all this time Gau still tended to go back to his incomplete speech pattern. You just couldn’t take all the jungle out of a wild child.
“Is there something wrong?” The more formal Gau spoke, the more obvious the strange graveling rumble in the back of his throat was. Cyan supposed it was from communicating on the Veldt.
He eyed Gau’s clothes critically, noting the sand and wrinkles. “Out in the sand again?”
He looked as if he were caught stealing food. “The chocobos wanted to run.”
“So you chased them around the desert?”
“I brought them all back.” Gau said defensively.
Chuckling, Cyan shook his head. “I won’t tell. Just let someone know next time.”
Gau nodded. Suddenly his long, thin fingers grabbed Cyan’s wrist. “C’mon! We’ll miss dinner!” He said bouncing, all innocent charm and boundless energy. Unlike Cyan’s own reserved and respectful son.
But, laughing at the boy, they joined the royal brothers. Cyan felt he had another family to look after, two wild children unused to the duties of the court and a young king who turned to him for wisdom. Cyan thought that perhaps his own family would forgive him for putting these three first.
After all, he thought, family is family. No matter who they are.

Date: 2004-06-09 03:53 pm (UTC)And THANK YOU for knowing that deserts are chilly at night! SO MANY people don't know that!!! I'm always amazed...
Although one thing--Cyan's language isn't as formal as it is in the game...

Date: 2004-06-12 12:46 pm (UTC)That was a spur of the moment type thing. But I really wouldn't be too surprised.
Cyan's language isn't as formal as it is in the game...
I couldn't really fit very formal language in something exactly like this:P
