Shanks bent to pick the hat up from the ground. It was thoroughly patched, worn through in several places, slightly singed, a little ragged and the band was a mottle of light and dark shades from sun-bleach, sea-salt and sweat. It was well-loved and he liked the addition of the string. “You really took care of my treasure.” He said, settling it on his head. The knot bounced just above his adam’s apple and Shanks made a note to extend it later. “Thanks, kid.”

Luffy tried to breathe but hacked into the stone cobbles. Dark eyes rolled back as he glared.

“Aw, kid. Don’t tell me you’re still upset that I didn’t take you with us way back then. You were just too young and Makino would’ve had my head if anything happened to you.” He smiled apologetically. “Besides, would it have nearly been as much fun as going out on your own?”

‘Why’ was a rasp that ghosted across Shanks’ ankle.

“Hm?”

“Why did you attack us?” He growled, shouting if he could open his throat enough. “Ben, Lucky, even Yassop. Why?” Tears ran across Luffy’s face but he was too proud and too angry to hide them. “You hurt my crew! Zoro, Chopper, Nami…” His voice caught in a half cough, half sob. “I thought we were friends…!”

Bending his head softly the hat shadowed Shanks’ eyes. “We are. And I’m proud of what you’ve done and how you’ve grown. You’d done things even Gold Roger would’ve loved to hear about. That’s why I’m doing this.” When he looked down at Luffy again his eyes were the kind of cold that made Sea Kings quiver. But Luffy had long since outgrown Sea Kings and those eyes just made him hurt and angry at the hurt all over again. “You said you’d get a crew better than mine. You said you wanted One Piece. So do many others, Luffy. So do I. And if you want it as badly as you say, you’ll have to beat me to get it.”

He knelt down and his duster fell open, revealing that the arm that had haunted Luffy’s dreams as a child had returned and on it was a small ring decorated with only a swirling green stone whose proximity made each cell in Lufy’s body shudder uncontrollably. “When it comes to treasure, pirates have no friends. And for one as great as One Piece, mercy is death.” Shanks’ hand, as it reached toward him, seemed larger than Luffy remembered. “I will not be as kind as Ace.”

Luffy gritted his teeth and it was the only thing that held inside the screaming of his heart.
