Summary: The connection, however coincidental they could be, was too much to be ignored.
There were a lot of kids from his class Naruto didn’t know a lot about. One of them happened to be Shikamaru. Not because they didn’t hang out (which, really, they didn’t do a lot, anyway) but because Shikamaru never talked about himself and Naruto never asked. So if Shikamaru did anything other than lounge around, look bored or complain about doing stuff, it always caught Naruto by surprise.
Such as seeing Shikamaru inside a general store with a basket full of food and cooking supplies.
Curious, Naruto followed him around the shop. “What’s up?” He asked.
“Picking up stuff for tonight.” Shikamaru replied. He had a long list in one hand, not bothering to glance up from it.
“What for?”
The other boy shrugged. “Family reunion. My grandfather’s sister’s brother-in-law or something like that. First time he’s been back in the village since before I was born.”
“Oh?” Naruto’s curiosity doubled. “Who is he?”
In the process of picking out a bottle of soy sauce, Shikamaru paused. “Who?” He blinked at Naruto. “You don’t know?”
“No.” Naruto said slowly.
Still with the flabbergasted look, Shikamaru indicated for Naruto to follow him and together they snuck over to the back of the store. There, Shikamaru ducked into the book aisle and when Naruto turned the corner, the other boy was on tiptoe, gingerly fingering a book from the high shelf of the adult section.
Naruto blinked. “Hey, isn’t that one of the old pervert’s-“ His jaw clanged open when Shikamaru held the back cover up to his sleeve. “No way.”
Shikamaru snorted. “Yeah. Pretty much.”
