Something I've been thinking of writing for a while and this week's chapter just happened to give the perfect set up for it.
Title: Sentimentality
Fandom: One Piece
Rating: PG for a swear word
Word Count: 466
Characters: Law, Doflamingo, Luffy
Summary: Spoilers for chapter 751. In which Doflamingo continues to up the ante.
Laughter echoed in the corridor- well -until it jumbled together like a vice in his ears. "That's a good look for you, brat. Maybe after I kill you, I'll have you stuffed like that for prosperity!"
Law struggled to sit upright, nearly falling off the bull in the process. "I knew it was too easy! A random gladiator able to find a shortcut to the palace for us-"
"And yet you still went in anyway." Doflamingo's grin was a vicious half-circle of sadistic enjoyment. "Your judgment is getting worse and worse. I suppose it's a good thing you never actually got the Heart Seat."
Luffy tilted his head from one side to the other, still staring at the dead end. "What are you talking about? What happened to the passage?"
"That guy lied to us," Law finally got himself to his knees, fists clenched tight in his cuffs. "Was money not enough?" He spat in Doflamingo's direction, "or did you have to promise him something more?"
"Safe escape for him and his brother." There was no promise of safety in the curve of lips and teeth. "It's always easy to predict sentimental fools. Especially those dumb enough to get caught by the enemy with vivre cards in their pockets."
Ice flushed through Law's veins, crackling in his bones. In a panic he reached for his pockets, forgetting about his cuffs.
"Don't bother looking, it's already on its way back to its originator. With a group of assassins, of course. It's so cute, the way you thought you could protect your crew from me by hiding them."
Law managed to grit out between teeth clenched and numb, "If you hurt a single one them-"
"You'll kill me?" Doflamingo's grin grew even wider. "Which is somehow different than what you already have planned? Honestly, brat, you've become so disappointingly predictable. You're smart and talented but not nearly as much as you think you are and far too soft-hearted, no matter how much we tried to beat it out of you." He sighed, almost like a regret if sick laughter didn't circle around his words. "I'd hoped you learned your lesson after you got my darling little brother killed. Maybe it'll stick this time, when they bring back the heads of your crew-"
Brick and mortar crumbled around Doflamingo, half burying him and Law snapped back to himself, twisting around to find Luffy standing upright, eyes bright in the dark and steam wafting from his body. In a distant sort of haze Law thought he'd never looked so large or powerful.
The rubble crumbled away, toothy grin flipped around and glinting dangerously in the low light. "Straw Hat," Doflamingo growled. "You're starting to piss me off."
Luffy stepped around Law, stance wide and ready for anything. "My thoughts exactly."
