Title: Not How You Think
Fandom: One Piece
Rating: PG
Word Count: 663
Characters: Law, Chopper
Summary: Spoilers through chapter 705 or so. Chopper is nice. Law, he doesn't realize, is not.

Law finds eventually himself in the medbay because the Straw Hats don't seem to care that he's wandering around their ship. As if they think because they have an alliance now, it's forever. He won't dissuade them of this, at least not yet, but the fact that none of them seem to give any outward hints of caution towards him- and there are very few of them capable of such subterfuge, he thinks -makes him... uncomfortable? Wary, perhaps? Or maybe it's just plain disbelief that the Straw Hats are just as simple as their captain.

"Oh, you're here!" And there's the little doctor with his sweet smile and large eyes, jumping onto a chair that spins from his momentum. "This is my medbay! Do you like it? The others don't really come in too often so it's nice to come here when they get too loud and stuff." Cloven feet dangle in the air, "Sunny can sometimes feel a little small with Luffy bouncing around all the time."

(It's amusing to hear that, especially considering his submarine was much smaller than most ships. But then most spaces can get uncomfortably small when you're stuck in them for days, sometimes weeks on end with nothing but walls straining against water pressure and the same faces passing by in that halls. Until the day Law's footsteps were a solitary echo, everything suddenly too empty and sterile and the submarine was too big for him to operate alone.

So he left it at Zou and made his plans to shrink that space down again, to make those artificial arteries live once more.)

"So this is all yours, then?" Law asks, browsing through the shelves of thick tomes. A couple of them are rare finds and at least one of them he had thought all copies of destroyed. He wonders where they ever found such treasures.

Chopper beams with pride. "Yup! Franky built aaaaaall this just for me! And Robin helped me find all sorts of books for it! Isn't it great? I love this room!" He all but rolls on his back, flailing his limbs with glee.

(He is impressed. He's impressed with the fact that such a creature could read such dense books, let alone put that knowledge to use. Bepo hadn't been good at reading.

Law grinds his molars together at the errant thought.)

"Your shipwright certainly has an eye for detail," Law allows. "And these are some high quality books." He pulls one off the shelf- a title and author unheard of by him -and he flips through it. He skims the words, unfamiliar names jumping out at him and that's enough to pique his interest.

"Do you want to borrow it? Since you're traveling with us, you can read whatever you want. Oh! Maybe we can even talk about treatments and technique!"

(When he smiles it's almost something indulgent and mild if it weren't for the shadows where it becomes a blade of ice and Chopper, like his captain, won't notice. But where Luffy is simple, Chopper is innocent and such things don't last. Not in the New World.)

"That would be fine. I wouldn't mind picking your brain, seeing what kind of interesting things you may be keeping in there."

He giggles- a sweet, happy sound borne from the idea that someone on board truly shares his interest. "You know, I used to think you were scary, but you're actually a nice guy! Even though you do scary things, but you're a pirate so of course you do. But you're still nice!"

Law's mouth tightens just enough the shadows deepen.

(He thinks about all the ways he'll throw Straw Hat and his crew at Kaido, which ones will offer them up as the best distraction, and he's only moderately certain they'll stall for enough time before they're all killed. He's least of all certain how useful Chopper will be in that regard.)

"No," he drawls out lightly. "I'm not that nice."

---

So here's what I think could happen but doubt it will because OP is kind of difficult to predict: Kaido has Law's crew, either by forcefully integrating the Heart Pirates, or just by snatching them from Law outright (law, perhaps, was starting trouble in kaido's territory or perhaps just in his mere presence, so kaido decided to break the brat). Not only that, but Kaido forced Law's crew to consume Smile, not only turning them into synthetic zoan users, but using Smile's addictive properties to keep them completely under his control. Law, stinging from the loss as much as his pride, starts making plans to get them back, first tracing the source of Smile and learning everything he can about it (including how to cure it), second by crippling production with destroying the factory (because even if ceasar was the lynchpin in it's creation, no matter how critical a cog, it's still useless if the rest of the machine is broken) and then by setting the Straw Hats loose. Law doesn't actually expect to beat Kaido, he just wants his focus elsewhere long enough to get his crew back and curing them.

This, of course, I am completely expecting to get jossed, but until then it's what I think happened.
