Summary: Pretentiousness for Washington Wednesday. Wash after the EMP.
His hands shook where his arms were draped over his knees (his fingers long and stretched thin like how long he'd waited for this moment stretched his life thin) and Wash took a deep breath (deeper than he ever remember taking one before because his mind was clear and new air filled all that opened space) and held it like smoke curling in his lungs (until his lung burned like his brain once did). Across from him, (Maine? Meta? Was there anything left to wear that body?) stirred on the ground (just a restless breath rattling through the husk that was once his friend) and Wash had to smile (because it was over and he was the last one left to see it happen and if he didn't smile he'd be trapped in his memories again).
He could hear footsteps rushing the hall (a staccato like gunfire and his fingers twitched at each shot) and he thought about the simulation troops he'd sent off (how many of those had he killed because of the Project, he couldn't help but wonder) and he thought about Epsilon (the empty space in his brain twisted, yearning for what it was missing and afraid of it all at once).
This was it. This was the end.
(Except it wasn't. It was only the beginning once more.)
