Summary: In the same AU as A Night with Prince Charming and One Year Later as well as celebrating Illinois's civil union law.
In a surprising twist of events, Ted found himself wide awake sometime before the sun actually came through the window. It was also one of the few times he was up before Michael was. Metaphorically speaking as Ted was perfectly content with letting the other man use him as a body pillow.
Watching Michael wake up was fascinating in its own way- mainly for the fact it was the complete opposite of how Ted did. Where it would take Ted the better part of twenty minutes just to get out of bed and then be a shambling mess for about an hour, Michael was practically alert and clear eyed from the get-go, as if consciousness was just a switch that got flipped on in his brain.
It was that suddenness that made Ted's sides jump when Michael's hands stroked down them. A head tilted upwards on Ted's chest and a he was greeted with a lazy smile, "Good morning."
"Morning," Ted replied. Michael's hands continued to move in aimless, lazy paths over his skin and Ted could feel heat beginning to build in his blood. Neither made a move to get up and Ted's feet brushed against Michael's ankles, trying to get as close to him as possible. A content sigh ghosted across the hairs on Ted's chest and suddenly calculations popped into his head.
It's been almost three years. 2.75 years to be more precise. Just over one thousand days. Granted it wasn't the longest relationship Ted had ever had, but it was the most... natural. That was a good word for it. Being with Michael was the most natural thing in the world. Not one night alone went by that Ted didn't wish he was with the other man. There was not one day where they didn't talk in person, on the phone, through email or text. There was nothing Ted looked forward to more than seeing Michael's face after work, on dates, first thing in the morning. Ted loved him like he had loved no one else.
His heart thudded hard in his chest as he said as neutrally as possible, "Illinois's civil union bill went into effect at the beginning of the month."
He could feel Michael's smile. "Good for them. How many states still have to get their act together? Forty-something?"
"My mom always wanted me to get married at her synagogue, even if it was to another man. She was convinced they'd allow it sooner or later and our congregation had always been a proponent of equal rights..."
"Your mom was a prophet."
"Michael?"
"Hm?" Michael's head turned up again and Ted knew he had to do this.
"Marry me? Or- civil union me? I don't really know how you're supposed to say that."
Michael's eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open. When he didn't say anything, Ted added a little, "Please?"
Suddenly his face was peppered with kisses and 'yes's. Eventually Ted managed to catch Michael's face between his hands and Michael's lips with his own. He could feel the taller man trembling against his skin, felt a tear trace along the path of his thumb. Michael pulled back with an ashamed laugh. "Sorry," he said thickly, "I didn't... I never thought-"
Ted pulled him back for another kiss so intense it left Michael whimpering. "I love you," Ted told him. "I love you more than anything and I want to spend every waking moment with you. You make the day better just by being there; you're everything I ever wanted in someone and everything I never knew I needed. I want to complete your life the way you do mine. You're more amazing than I can say- don't ever doubt that."
Michael sniffled, tucking his face against Ted's neck. "You're too good to me."
"No. You deserve everything I can give you and more."
There was a noncommittal hum, but Ted could feel the self-doubting tension bleeding out of Michael's shoulders. A soft kiss was pressed to the seam of his neck, "When did you want to do this?"
"Well, if you don't care about ceremony, we could go while your school's on break. Or, if you want some kind of extravaganza I'll call the synagogue tomorrow and figure out a general time?"
"I'm fine with just you and me and an officiator. And my sister. And Barbara. And anyone else that will kill us if they miss this."
Ted laughed, "Sounds good to me. Maybe we should do something to celebrate? You know- with just us?"
Michael grinned wickedly, his hand already tracing over Ted's hips and beyond. "I think I have an idea..."
Ted just put his arms around Michael's shoulders, happy to let him do as he pleased.
