Would you believe I was originally planning porn for today? Then I read Power Girl #18 and this happened...

Title: Those Who Fell Through
Fandom: DCU
Rating: G
Word Count: 506
Characters: Ted, Booster
In Response to: 30 days of Boostle - humiliation
Summary: Generation Lost. This didn't happen but everyone believes it did.

Everyone knew he was going through a rough time- his business had steadily been losing money to the point of bankruptcy, someone had broken into one of his warehouses and stolen over a hundred pounds of kryptonite he'd been entrusted to dispose of, and electrical fire had destroyed his home and put his best friend in the hospital -but no one had expected Ted to kill himself over it all. To make matters worse, no one had known about it, too caught up in all the converging problems of Luthor hijacking Batman's OMAC Project, the start of the Rann-Thanagar war and the rampage of the Spectre against magic users. They had known Ted had gone missing and an attempt was made to locate him, but with so much going on it wasn't until Batman had gone to get the prototype mass EMP generator that Ted had developed in order to fight the OMACs that he was finally found. On the floor of the warehouse, a gun in his hand and a hole in his head.

Ted Kord died a broken man who had lost everything and was spurned the help he sought.

The news rocked many- for all his pranks and bouts of immaturity, he was still a well-liked man and now he was the ultimate symbol of failure for the superhero community to one of their own. The news shocked all of his friends, but none so much as Booster who refused to believe it.

"You're lying," he accused Batman from the moment he heard what had happened to his best friend, "he wouldn't do something like that. Ted never would've done that!" He attacked Batman, accused everyone else for abandoning Ted, blamed them for his suicide. If a few had the courage they might have agreed with him.

But then Booster got worse. It eventually went from 'Ted wouldn't' to 'Ted didn't' and he had managed to convince himself that someone had killed the man. He created a conspiracy linking Kord Omniversal's lack of funds to the warehouse break-in to the house fire to some unknown puppet master trying to humiliate Ted before killing him under the guise of suicide. Booster would blame it on anyone from well-known villains to former Kord employees and always someone had to tell him how it couldn't be true and remind him that the only one that killed Ted was himself. It would quiet Booster for some time before it started all over again.

Then, for a while, Booster disappeared. Some began to worry that he- they had always been close and Booster was dangerously unstable, an emotional timebomb-

He eventually resurfaced- regressed -and acting almost manically shallow who self-destructed spectacularly on national tv. Even then he never gave up on the idea that someone had killed Ted.

Booster Gold was a broken man who had lost everything and spurned all the help offered to him. If a few had the courage they would admit to wondering how long it would be until he followed after his friend.
