ajremixTitle take from the Sara Bareilles song which I think is somewhat fitting for when Ted and Booster's relationship is going from 'off' to 'on'. And also because I couldn't think of anything else.

Summary: Takes place after Birds of Prey 42. Someone had to tell Booster.
He answered the phone with a, "So you've finally decided to accept that date?"
"/Boo- wait, what? What date?/"
"The one I asked you on."
On the other end, Kara growled. "/If you mean at the last JLA party, I laughed in your face about it. If I were there now, I'd be laughing in your face again./"
"Then you called because you missed my dulcet voice?"
"/No! Booster- I'm calling about Ted!/"
"I hope it's not because you want to tell me you think he's hot. I just had a very nice lunch and I don't want to get rid of it that fast."
"/He's in the hospital./"
Booster froze, the muscles in his jaw tightening so much it hurt. "Oh yeah?" His mind was a million miles of blank shock but his tone was as light and smarmy as ever. "He went and got that lap band surgery, huh? Well, it was only a matter of time before he fell off the food wagon again, I guess."
"/Booster, you're not listening to me. He's in the hospital for his heart./"
"He never could tell when he took his jokes too far."
"/It's not a joke! I had to take him there myself!/"
"I'm sure he enjoyed the trip. Hope he got a grope in for me."
"/God- get over yourself, Booster! I don't know what happened between you two-/"
The sharp, "Nothing happened between us," came out before Booster could stop it.
He was met with a caustic, "/Is that what you're upset about?/"
"Oh get off that! There was nothing and there is nothing between us, alright? That stopped being funny a decade ago!"
"/Look- I'm sorry, it's just...God, seeing him on the floor like that, so still and pale... I was scared, Booster. It didn't look like he was breathing and I could barely hear his heart beat. Even when I was carrying him to the hospital I could barely hear it. I was so scared that he would die in my arms, that I wouldn't be able to get him to a doctor quick enough to save him. He didn't-/" Kara's voice broke off with a shuddering intake of breath. "/Ted's a good guy, even for us. He doesn't deserve to go out like this./"
Booster said nothing, barely even listening to Kara anymore. He was lost in the memory of Ted- pale and thin and weak -in a hospital bed and Booster bent over him, counting seconds between Ted's breathing, between his heartbeats, clinging to an arm stuck with tubes, praying to see color back in his best friend's face, to hear him laugh, see him smile, see him live again. Every day Booster swore he'd never let Ted get hurt so badly again, that Ted would never be put in a hospital bed indefinitely again.
But he was and where was Booster when he was needed? How was Booster not at his bedside right now?
"Kara," he said softly, "thank you."
There was a sniffle on the other end and were it anyone but Power Girl, Booster would suspect she was crying. "/Just thought you should know./"
"Thanks for that, too, but I meant... thank you for taking care of him."
There was a brief pause and when she spoke again, Booster knew Kara figured out everything he meant by that. "/I just wish I could've done more./"
"I know. That's why you're a hero."
"/Do you want me to keep you updated on his condition?/"
"No, I... I think it's about time I paid him a visit anyway."
"/Alright. Take care, Booster./"
"You, too. Bye."
Booster hung up the phone, took a moment to recompose himself, then called up his publicist and told him to cancel all appointments for the foreseeable future.
