Summary: This thread is pretty much all the context you need.
“Ted! TedTedTed- you gotta check this out!” Booster cried, skidding to a stop by Ted’s seat, papers flapping in his hand. “I’ve got a tv show!” Before Ted could even reply, the papers were shoved under his nose. “Look! Conception art!”
“What art?” Pulling the papers from Booster’s hand and flipping through them, Ted rolled his eyes. “Concept art, Booster. It’s called concept art.”
“Same thing.”
“It’s really not.” He looked through the first few pages of designs again, and then again. “Did they not do your design yet?”
“Of course they did mine! I’m the main character!”
“All I see is some half-starved girl in a mini-skirt.”
“That’s me!”
Ted raised an eyebrow. “So it’s a show about you being a transvestite?”
“What- no!” Booster whapped his hand against Ted’s ear. “Can’t you recognize Japanese words? It’s a Japanese show. And what’s big over there? Magical girls!” At Ted’s blank look, Booster jabbed at the concept art. “No, it’s awesome! They turned Skeets into a house cat that turns into a flying horse!”
“He turns from a cat to a horse? What the hell?”
“Not the weirdest thing to come out of Japan. This is the country that made a killing on kids enslaving creatures for gladiator games, remember?” Booster jabbed at the papers again. “They even made a character for you!”
Sure enough, there was another character, just as tall and impossibly anorexic, dressed in a fancy blue suit that looked more like formal wear than something to fight in. Ted thought his character looked rather pretty. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that.
Booster leaned over the back of Ted’s chair eagerly. “See, our characters are best friends in their civilian identities, but they don’t know that the other is a superhero so all sorts of misunderstandings and hijinks happen because of it. And you get a magical fairy for a sidekick!”
“Booster,” Ted said slowly, looking over jotted notes on the character sheet, “did you read what they actually have planned for our characters?”
“How should I know? It’s not like I read Japanese. Not like you do, either.”
“I have a Japanese branch, based in Japan, run by Japanese people. I know enough to get by.” He handed the papers back. “They plan on having our characters fall in love.”
“With who?”
“Each other.”
Slowly, Booster blinked down at his friend, taking the papers. “Huh.” He looked at the designs again. “Well, I think it’s a romantic plot twist, don’t you?”
Ted just looked at him. “Sometimes I really don’t get you.” He stood and walked out, shaking his head.
“Since you didn’t say no,” Booster called after him, “I’m gonna tell ‘em it’s okay!”
