[drabble][One Piece, Sanji, G] Because
Title: Because
Fandom: One Piece
Rating: G… and one curse word
Word Count: 346
Characters: Sanji
Summary: Sanji on crashing and burning.
As a cook Sanji was used to getting burns. As a lady’s man, that meant he was twice as used to it.
There was a time when the Baratie was new and Sanji was still learning to cook that food in one of the pans caught on fire. He knew it was dangerous, he knew it would burn him, but Sanji- afraid of what would happen to the restaurant, afraid of what that shitty old man would say –had grabbed the pan.
Zeff bandaged his hands later and told him he wasn’t allowed in the kitchen for a month and that time Sanji would take in studying others’ techniques. He was mad. Not at the pan or the fire or at Zeff, but at himself. And when Zeff asked him why he had reached for the pan when he knew he would get hurt, Sanji could only say:
“Because.”
Sanji forced himself to make mistakes after that, to ensure he could handle any situation in the kitchen. He dealt with every fire and learned to not fear burning. And every mistake afterward hurt less then that first one. Because the ones you see coming are the ones that are the worst. Because, though you know it’ll hurt, you can’t stop yourself.
That was why he isolated himself in the kitchen. Because he had tripped over himself for Nami’s sake and jumped through every hoop she asked of him and some she didn’t just to make her happy. He struggled for her and strove for her and out on deck she lay next to Luffy, playing with his hair as he slept.
He knew, then, that she wouldn’t belong to him. He had always known, somehow, but he still struggled and strove. Even Zoro, who could see Sanji’s useless endeavors and the crash that lay ahead, had asked him, “You knew this was going to happen.” And he did. “So why did you keep falling over for her?”
And Sanji sighed and said, “Because.”
Because the ones you see coming are the ones that are the worst.
