[drabble][Steven Universe, Sapphire, G] Then the Future Changed

Title: Then the Future Changed
Fandom: Steven Universe
Rating: G
Word Count: 443
Characters: Sapphire
Summary: Sapphire and the moment before everything changed.

Up until this moment Sapphire had seen her entire life laid out. Ever since she first understood the nature of her clairvoyance she knew. She could see the future of everything that currently and would eventually exist though the concept of that was so broad and the less she knew a subject the less she understood what she saw so Sapphire mainly peeked at her own future and those others requested of her. So she had known, since the beginning, that she would be standing above an alien world and having her physical form interrupted by a renegade Pearl.

After that the future was... inconclusive. Like seeing it play out behind a streaming waterfall, details lost and forms blurry. Sapphire knew she wouldn't be shattered, merely reverted back to her gem. She had never experienced that before and deduced that was what caused her vision to be so unclear.

And so, eventually, there she was, watching two of her Rubies clatter to the ground and the third falling with a grunt. And there was the Pearl, as unrelenting in real life as she had been in Sapphire's visions.

She knew, of course, that what she saw wasn't inevitable. At the same time she knew the most clear and persistent visions were the ones that were most probable. She had watched, more often than not, those she spoke with trying to prevent the future she'd seen, one they didn't like, from happening and failing to do so overwhelmingly. Being force to reform on homeworld was not an outcome worth preventing, not when it also included capturing a pair of rebellious gems. Sapphire had seen this coming and, as she had done with every other unpleasant event she had foreseen, resigned herself to it.

But she wasn't- not entirely. Despite her stoicism and the time beforehand she still wasn't prepared for this. She was so scared- of the Pearl, of pain, of not knowing what it was like to be forced into her gem. She was scared about the future she couldn't see clearly, she was scared of being scared, of the feeling welling up in her that wanted to fight and struggle even when she knew it was futile. She wasn't facing death but in some primal part of her she imagined it would feel just like this.

Sapphire stood, calm and still, while every cell in her body screamed out I don't want to die!

Then, just as the weapon came down, a warmth embraced her and her senses stretched and grew and evolved and she felt an equally panicked thought in her mind, I won't let you die!

And the everything changed.
